About this product

Product Information

One of the immortal bard's most frequently performed works gets a first-rate cinematic treatment here, via director Michael Radford (IL POSTINO). Al Pacino is virtually unrecognizable as Shylock, bringing an old-world gravitas to the role and clearly inspiring the rest of the cast to match his intensity. They succeed, and the result is riveting, rousing entertainment. Even if one is familiar with the play in advance, this is white-knuckle suspense and swooning romance all the way through. A 16th-century Venetian sea merchant (Jeremy Irons), devoted to a young lord (Joseph Fiennes), owes a debt for "a pound of flesh" to the anguished Jewish moneylender Shylock. Lovingly filmed in Venice, the film looks great, with settings and costumes all sporting a dusky, lived-in look that matches the subdued, naturalistic interpretation of the dialogue. Lynn Collins is excellent and ethereal as Portia, and her love scenes with Fiennes have an alchemical power that lifts them to dizzyingly mythic romantic heights. Vague homoerotic content and the grim realities of Jewish oppression are not shied away from here, which lends the film further richness and complexity. With the play's rich array of dramatic and comedic elements all perfectly in tune, MERCHANT OF VENICE earns its place as the first truly great Shakespeare film of the 21st century.

    Seeking revenge never pays—everyone loses.

It is one of the truly “great” Shakespeare productions and the cast is outstanding. Pacino takes one’s breath away with his acting, as does Irons, and the disguised ladies were subtle and convincing as males while never losing their ‘true’ characters underneath. The play is a profound message to us all regarding ethnic bias and prejudice, as well as forgiving each other for being so painfully human. Deeply moving.

  • A beautiful film with masterful performances!

This is a splendid Shakespearean movie, and it is beautifully decorated and filmed--it shows magnificently on a HD system. The performances are wonderful-nobody does patient suffering like Jeremy Irons and Pacino's Shylock captures that mystifying mix of grasping avarice and reluctant sympathy the role evokes, masterfully. Collins and Fiennes are at their engaging best, and special note must be given to Zuleikha Robinson and Kris Marshall for the zest they bring to their supporting roles. This film rates a five--but the topless shots of the ladies of the Rialto, while undoubtedly, consistent with the time and place, limits its use in schools, a primary application for me.

  • The Finest Shakespeare Production Ever Filmed

Al Pacino is extraordinary and perfect as Shylock, Jeremy Irons and Joseph Fiennes, too, are luminous. It's filmed in Venice, Rome, and and other European locales, which gives it more realism than any other production ever done before. It's also the least-abridged Merchant you've probably ever seen. Even if you think you don't like The Bard, this will illuminate your mind and heart.

  • Merchant of Venice/Al Pacino

Shakespeare usually never disappoints. This version with Al Pacino was very well done. Pacino shines in this film, his acting was superb. The only difficulty was some of the lines used by the actors most were quite easy to understand but a few left one shaking one's head with HUH? Definitely a film to see....don't miss it.

  • Came Sealed.

Item arrived sealed, even with sticker closure. Even though it only has French subtitles it played on my american blu ray player. Movie review: This is listed in my Shakespeare encyclopedia as a comedy, this movie however is not. It has good story telling in it and to be cautious. Shows again throughout history how jews are mistreated. Makes you pause and think. Al Pacino is gripping as always.
