Enemy at the Gates (DVD, 2001)
This is a riveting story about the exploits of a hero of the former Soviet Union, Vassili Zaitsev. He was one of the most famous Russian snipers during WWII. In 1942, when Germany attacks The Soviet Union, a major stand develops at Stalingrad. Sensing that all of the Soviet Union will fall if Stalingrad fell, Nikita Khruschev, is called in to personally take control. A young Political Officer, Danilov, catches Khruschev's ear, with his ideas of how to turn the situation around. He had met a young soldier that day hiding amongst the dead, who saved his life by his ability to shoot. This man was Vassili Zaitsev. Danilov gets Vassili promoted to sniper, where he kills only German officers. By publicizing his exploits, he not only becomes a hero to all soldiers, he shows that the Germans can ... Faced with their offensive being totally stalled the Germans are prompted to send their top sniper, Major Konig, the sniper instructor, to Stalingrad to kill Zaitsev. The cat and mouse struggle continues for quite some time until Vassili is finally able to kill Konig. Vassili Zaitsev went on to have more than 300 confirmed kills by wars end, and was named a hero of the Soviet Union. Excellent movie!

This is a story for mature audience only. It parallels in some way the 300 and the stand at Thermopolis Pass, except the Battle for Stalingrad is not fought with SGI special effects, but with convincing realities. As in the 300, the mythology comes from actual events and people. Jude Law is the boy-become-hero and the supporting cast is phenomenal. While the Russians were hopeless out-numbered by the Nazi guns, tanks, and bomber planes, they held thier own in the propaganda war, printing newspapers to offset the terrifying and relentless Nazi loudspeaker announcements. The snipers kept the Nazi war machine at bay between counter attacks of the Red Army, whose soldiers often had to charge without a weapon in hand. In desperation, the Nazi try to counter sniper warfare, to kill the heroes ... This is a story for mature audience only.
