A Reliable Used Hot plate
Pros: This is a quality hot plate magnetic stirrer. These devices last for decades and are reliable and often are easily repaired when a part fails. I tested both the heating element and the stirrer and found that both are functioning well. The hot plate heated up quickly and the the ceramic plate held the heat for a while after being turned off which is nice. The stir controls are reliable and give a good range from slow stirring to a very aggressive stir. For $70 this is a quality product that should continue to function for years. Cons: The power cable is frayed and it's frayed right at the base. It will need to be handled carefully to extend the life of the cord. Luckily once it does finally break it shouldn't be difficult to repair as in my undergrad I worked in the shop repairing ... Pros: This is a quality hot plate magnetic stirrer. Honestly I'm just searching. The device is heavily used but it was described and sold for a heavily used hot plate. Heavily built USA made stir plate
Took a chance on a used stir plate vs a new low cost one. Turned out to be a good choice, this unit is well made and works very well. Fully adjustable spin rpm gets your stir going from barely visible to full cyclone and every thing in between. And does it silently. I've run it for days on end on yeast starters and I expect to to be working for me many years down the road.

Used but Useful!
So this was a used unit and was as expected. It works, but I am replacing the cordset and cleaning the unit. Even used it is ar better than a new unit from China. This is a good alternative for soeone not afraid to fiddle with scientific apparatus/
