About this product

Product Information

Liliana Cavani's controversial film featured a breakout performance by theAmerican actress Charlotte Rampling in this Italian tour de force. Thirteen years after World War II, while working as a night porter in a Vienna hotel occupied by ex-Nazis, a former SS concentration camp officer, played by Dirk Bogarde, is astonished when a past victim-lover (Rampling), checks into the hotel with her husband. Despite the horrific nature of their former "relationship"--glimpsed in flashbacks of rape, torture and humiliation--their sadomasochistic sexual bond is soon rekindled. Eventually, the SS wants to eliminate the woman, as she is a witness to war crimes. THE NIGHT PORTER is not only an operatic and disturbing cult film that deftly examines the cruelty and decadence of Nazi culture, but an unconventional love story. Based on writer-director Liliana Cavani's interviews with an actual concentration camp survivor, THE NIGHT PORTER is one of the more controversial films of the 1970s, examining aspects of human interaction few works dare to touch.

    Disappointed with Criterion Collection version.

After reading a previous review I was careful to get the uncensored version of this classic film. Unfortunately, that's about all I got. The Criterion Collection supposedly 'focuses on licensing important classic and contemporary films and selling them to film aficionados. Criterion is noted for helping to standardize a number of new ideas, such as the letterbox format for widescreen films, adding bonus features, commentary tracks, doing film restoration , and releasing special editions for home video.' There was NONE of this except that it's a widescreen version. Absolutely NO special features, commentary, perspective, nothing. The 'restoration' wasn't even that great. A lot of noise at start of film, and then maybe I just got used to it and didn't notice. This is the 2nd time I've ...

  • Censored Version Alert

This is not so much a 'review' as it is a 'heads-up/warning' to potential purchasers. I recently thought to save a few bucks (over the Criterion DVD) and purchased, instead, a version of the film 'The Night Porter' being offered on eBay by an Asian distributor for a Korean pressing of the DVD. The quality of the print was fine BUT this was a CENSORED VERSION - with an annoying digital screen displayed over the naked pubic area any time such was in the film. I have encountered this censorship before on another Asian release of an erotic (Tinto Brass) film. If this doesn't matter to you - go ahead & save a little money, but if you want the pure unadulterated version you'll likely have to spring for the Criterion package (as I have now done). Otherwise - a great, bent, flick!

  • Like I remember

It was a gift to My Wife Gitane: "It had been 27 years since I last saw it, didn't remember much except that it was intense. I wanted My Husband Rikk to see it. It was just as I remembered. Great price too!

  • THE NIGHT PORTER 1999 on DVD A CLASSIC

The Night Porter (1974) is a fantastic movie about a former Nazi officer hiding out after world war two in a Hotel in Vienna. He belongs to a sub organization of ex-Nazi's hiding out in Austria after the war. Set in 1957, some 12 years after the end of the war, he meets a jewish girl that he had tormented in the concentration camps and had an affair with. Despite the atrocities of the Nazi's, she falls in love with him and continues the love affair. The Nazi friends become distrustful of them both and they have to hide out. Great operetic music sets the mood for this classic. Great quality on DVD. Dirk Bogarde was magnificent in this film as the Former Nazi Officer and should have received an oscar nomination. Charlotte Rampling was beautiful and perfect for his part. This film is a ...

  • strange but true

A rather interesting tale of how bizarre the Nazis were mixed in with sadistic and sometimes brutal sex--great acting as Charlotte Rampling remains one of my favorites
