History in a Jewell Case
If not for a lucky ebay search, I'd have missed this little gem - maybe forever. I'd rather be lucky than good any day! It's just a concert that Charlie Daniels (Charlie Daniels Band - CDB) did back in '75 at Middle Tennessee State University and includes some history of how these Volunteer Jams got started. The artists performing in Volunteer Jam II are some of the best in history. Sadly, many of these artists are no longer with us, as they were invited to the big gig and are doing that thing now. Every song, every clip, indeed every frame is historic "keeper" for anyone over 35 years old. This Jam (Volunteer Jam II) is the only one that had the entire original Marshall Tucker Band including Tommy and Toy Caldwell. [as a side note: Tommy and Toy were Marine Corps Viet Nam Veterans ... [as a side note: Tommy and Toy were Marine Corps Viet Nam Veterans prior to starting up this band] Tommy was the original front man and played bass while Toy wrote the songs, played lead guitar and sang many of his own songs. Volunteer Jam II also featured an impromptu blues segment where Charlie Daniels left the stage (had to take a wiz, I guess) and as he walked off he said something to Jimmy Hall ("Hey Jimmy - sing 'em some blues") and Jimmy belts out some really powerful blues vocals which turn out to be a major highlight of the Jam. Jimmy Hall, lead singer, sax and harp for Wet Willie, is on stage almost the entire Jam playing harp, sax and backup vocals as well as some lead vocals. Jimmy tries to maintain a low profile off to the leaft of the stage peeking out only when he plays a solo piece but when he sings, he becomes the King Kong on the concert hall. Nobody, that’s right, nobody can sing with the heart and soul that Jimmy Hall possess. Best there is - best there ever was (‘cept for Ray Charles). Dickey Betts (Allman Brothers Band), Dru Lombar (Grinderswitch), Chuck Leavell (ABB, Rolling Stones) and a stage full of other great artists form a chemistry that can never be reproduced - never! So, if you were lucky enough to get one of these DVDs you've got a real prize. If not - keep trying - you might get lucky.

Gotta Git U Sum CDB!
If u have never been to a Charlie Daniels concert this is the next best thing! I have saw CDB many tymes..if u ever git the chance go see them u wont be disappointed! Nuthin' beats the CDB in person but this dvd gives u a good tatse of CDB & frynds! N my book Charlie ROCKS! Great 2 add 2 ur music dvd collection. Highly recommend this dvd ...from a TN gyrl about a band from TN...do know what I'm talkin' about on this one 4 shur!If u have never been to a Charlie Daniels concert this is the next best thing! A must-have for any lover of Southern Rock.
Charlie Daniels in his prime, wow. Add 'guest' performers who'd go on to become who's who in the rock world? Makes this an outstanding, entertaining watch w/ few equals.

CDB with Marshall Tucker Band as their Encore
Although the quality of the Video is not perfect, if taken as a slice of history, this DVD is great. Anyone who has seen either CDB or MTB recently will appreciate these bands in what I consider to be their prime. And just to see Charlie Daniels perform in TN is a treat in and of itself. If your into Southern Rock and remember the kick a$$ Southern Rock hayday of the 70's, hike up your Depends, bring your walker over to your DVD player, relax and enjoy this show.Although the quality of the Video is not perfect, if taken as a slice of history, this DVD is great.
