Wasn't super happy with this transaction. I was hoping to use the lens for a soccer game. I specifically asked for working condition and seller says it "appears to be". How hard can one test whether the item works or not. Found it the hard way when it arrived. The lens DOES NOT WORK. focus is set to a certain distance that either manual focusing, or AF would not work. the only compensation for wasted energy is the seller's acceptance of the return to which I am entitled by eBay policies.

Buyer was aware that I was unable to test, simply because don't have the equipment to do so. Return was accepted immediately, label was sent right away as well. Not sure what I could have done more for the buyer.

    Good product and price

At high telephoto magnification (300mm) it is a bit difficult to hand hold the lens even with VR on. One needs to hold steady, hold breath and shoot the picture. It works better leaning of setting you elbows on a rest. One can achieve sharp pictures this this lens easy at lower magnifications and certainly is comparable to my Nikon DX VR lens at the 150 mm at this range. I will need to test on the humming birds on the Silk Floss tree to compare.

  • Top critical review

Lightweight and convenient but not the sharpest.

This is one of the lowest cost 70-300 lenses with fast autofocus and stabilization both of which perform well. The lens has a autofocus problem with my d7200 that does not occur on a d300 and that is when it does not have enough contrast to autofocus it will go to past the infinity mark and run the motor against the infinity stop making a squeaking sounds, though I find it easy to avoid this problem now that I understand it. The lens is softer wide open than I like at 300mm but it does improve to acceptable levels when stopping down even to f/6.3 although f/8 is best. I chose this lens because the autofocus is very fast, enough for birds in flight and it is light weight and small and because it is more compatible with older cameras than the af-p lenses which are faster focusing, sharper, ...

  • A Good lens at a great price

I purchased this lens for a vacation to some of the National Parks. I owned a 70-250 mm 2.8 lens which is a great lens but is heavy and much larger. this lens is light and has vibration reduction. It produced very nice results as a hand held lens and because of its weight I was able to secure the camera to a tripod instead of the lens. this allowed for a quick transition when needed.

  • Competes with the Nikkors, but falls short in quality and performance.

I've tried at least 4 copies of this lens, 3 of the Nikkor 70-300mm VR, and 2 copies of the Nikkor 55-300mm. Consequently, I have some experience using and evaluating these lenses. First, lets start with the positives. The Tarmon is a large lens that feels good to the touch. It looks good and the materials feel as if this is a well made lens. The size and weight does make it an excellent match for FX bodies. The VC, at first glance (more on this below) gives you a satisfying lock of the image that gives the impression that this stabilization system is far superior to others. The autofocus is fast and great for action shots. Now, for the not so good...Unfortunately, quality control is all over the place with this lens. Out of the four copies tested, all had some image quality ...

  • at this price it is a steal

I find the Tamron 100-300 VC USD to be the best long lens of any brand that I have used. The stability of the image in the viewfinder is breathtaking, and the focus performance is excellent. I find the imagery to be very good wide open and stunning at f/8. I do not hesitate to use this on the finest of details (e.g. chickadees) and I am never disappointed.
