Otwithitanding the inviol'able fecrecy 'which thelnquifition exac'teth, by' Oath of all thofe who approach her Tribunals, I failed not to have fome notice of the depofitions which were made againft me. The apprehention of falling into the hands of the Holy Office made me go to find out the Commiffary, from'whom I hoped for Counfel and'pro teftion, becaufe I-had been recommended to him by Perfons, who de ferved that confideration {hould be had of them; and fer that all the time I had been at Daman, he had always affee'ted to be accounted one of my friends.' I therefore fairly related to him how things had palled; and praying him to infirue't me in what' manneti {hould behave, my felfforthe future, affuring him that asi had never any ill deli n, fol was readto amend my felf, and even to recant, if he Ihould ju ge that I had advanced any thing which was not convenient. This Father affured me, that my proceeding had given fcandal to many People, that he was fatisfied that my intention had not been ill, and that there was nothing in all which I had faid abfolutely Criminal, that neverthelefs he advifed me to accommodate my felf a little. To the fathion of the people; and not to fpeak fovfreely of thefe forts of matters, and above all, of Images, which 'i hadtoften faid ought not to be adored, which] had en-i deavoured to prove by Citations out of the Scriptures and the Fathers. That the people were in truth in fome light Errours, which paffed for a! True Devotion, but that it was not for me to undertake to corretft'and reform them.
