As in his 1977 film THE LATE SHOW, Robert Benton focuses on a private detective who's playing the back nine. With the passing of a quarter century, however, the director's tone had grown more somber. Paul Newman stars as the detective, Harry Ross, living in semiretirement in Santa Monica on the estate owned by his movie-star friends, Jack (Gene Hackman) and Catherine Ames (Susan Sarandon). When Harry delivers a package as a favor to Jack, he finds fellow private dick Lester Ivar (M. Emmett Walsh) dying from a bullet wound. Harry checks out Ivar's apartment, where he uncovers 20-year-old clippings relating to the disappearance of Catherine's first husband. As he tries to get to the bottom of the case, he enlists the help of a former lover, LAPD lt. Verna Hollander (Stockard Channing), and receives unsolicited assistance from feckless chauffeur Reuben Escobar (Giancarlo Esposito). Ex-cop and former studio security chief Raymond Hope (James Garner) also seems to know a thing or two about the case. Strong ensemble acting and Benton's characteristically nuanced and intelligent writing highlight this sinuous, richly textured murder mystery.

Twilight Shines
Well worth watching or owning.The Late, Great, Paul Newman in one of his last roles. Paul was one of the great screen Private detectives ( Just check out HARPER or THE DROWNING POOL ). Watching this movie it was evident that his age was catching up to him, but he still sparkled. It reminded me of Henry Fonda in ON GOLDEN POND, Paul gives a strong and wistful performance just as Henry did. This is one of Paul's most subtle , understated, and "rusty" performances. Paul is ably backed up by Gene Hackman, Susan Sarandon, James Garner, Stockard Channing, M. Emmett Walsh, and Reese Witherspoon. Each of these actors/ actresses is at the top of their game with nobody "Phoning it IN". One of the delights of the movie is a 22 year old Reese Witherspoon who held her own against several hollywood ... Well worth watching or owning.The Late, Great, Paul Newman in one of his last roles. The reason that I bought Twillight was for the cast. Paul Newman,Susan Sarandon,Gene Hackman,and Reese Witherspoon. Paul Newman plays a private detective who does some work for a rich couple played by Gene Hackman and Susan Sarandon. Reese Witherspoon plays the daughter. The film starts out with private detective on a mission to bring the daughter back home. He follows daughter and her boyfriend back to the hotel room. While there,we get to see an excellent topless scene with Reese Witherspoon. The private detective takes her back home. Then the husband sends him to pay off a couple of blackmailers. Obviously,the job wasn't going to be that simple. He finds a cop shot and no sight of the person that he supposed to give the money to. James Garner is excellent in a small role as a guy who ... TWILIGHT-Very good detective mystery.
I grew up reading Nancy Drew,the Hardy Boys, and was weaned to some of my grandmother's books: ie. Micky Spillane's Mike Hammer series. I got hooked on those though-guy private eye mysteries, and love Twilight because it is remeniscient of the detective stories that I still love. Paul Newman is plausible as Harry Ross, an ex-cop PI, who gets involved with murder, past and present. Newman is terrific in this role, as he was when he played detective Lew Harper in two earlier films, Harper, and The Drowning Pool.
