About this product

Product Information

The Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX lens is an excellent standard lens for digital photographers who need coverage in one of the most critical lens depths for the widest range of normal exposures. The 16-50mm focal range is equivalent to a 24-75 mm range of a full 35mm format lens and is able to zoom smoothly throughout its entire range, giving you the freedom to capture your subject at different distances without needing to change your distance from it. What all this means is that outside of the long telephoto and extreme wide angle shots that require specific lenses, this AT-X Pro DX lens will quickly become a workhorse lens that utilizes a focal length photographers will use most often to capture a number of great images with good depth of field. This Tokina lens has a wide minimum aperture of f/2.8, with a minimum focus distance of 1.0 foot, which allows you to use faster shutter speeds during low-light conditions and creates better portraits by limiting the depth of field and focusing attention on the people and objects you photograph. This creates stronger, more intimate images for portrait photographers that rely on powerful people photos. The AT-X lens also boasts a maximum aperture of f/22, satisfying the desires of sports photographers and photojournalists that shoot subjects in transition and on the move and require fast-focusing lenses that retain their integrity throughout a lens’ entire focal range. You’ll appreciate these types of features when you want to focus quickly in order not to miss the perfect moments that create great photos. The Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8 lens works seamlessly with many NIkon and Canon camera bodies, although the auto-focus feature (AF) is not supported when using it with certain Nikon cameras like the D40, D60, and D3000 SLR cameras. Fortunately, the lens has an exclusive One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism on the focus ring that makes switching from auto-focus (AF) to manual focus (MF) a breeze. The lens is 3.3 inches wide and 3.8 inches long, with a 77mm filter size that’s compatible with a wide range of common filters one might use for special effects and lens protection. This Tokina lens is specifically designed for digital cameras with smaller APS-C sized sensors and works best with these camera bodies. Tokina designed a single super-low dispersion (SD) element in the rear optics of this lens to make it lighter to use and faster to focus. Tokina’s superior construction here also focuses all colors more accurately and corrects for chromatic aberrations that other lenses can’t match. This Tokina 16-50mm ATX Pro DX also has a water-repellent coating on the front optical lens that resists water spots and makes smudges and fingerprints easier to clean when necessary. Tokina’s ATX Pro lenses deliver the consistency professional photographers require – crisp, sharp images throughout its focal range at an affordable price. This Nikon f/2.8 lens is also built to last and will provide years of dependable service that make it a significant bargain when compared to others in its price range.

  • Tokina AF 16-50mm F2.8 AT-X 165 Pro DX Lens

This lens has exceeded my expectations, producing sharp images with very little distortion and natural color rendition. It is a heavy lens, with a very solid feel and may be a bit heavy for a D70, but balances quite well on a D300. At 50mm it is able to focus as close as 7 inches. The focusing is fast and accurate. The closest lens with a similar focal range in the Nikon line-up is the AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D, costing three times as much. This lens is definitely worth a look, especially if you pinching pennies.

  • Great performance for a fantastic value.

Great lens! I'd rate IQ good to very good wide open and excellent stopped down 2.8. I did need AF fine tune on my D7000, but given similar issues that could be a body issue as much as a lens issue. Once dialed in, it's fantastic. Lens isn't small or light, construction is excellent, lens is solid and well built. Overall it isn't a Nikon 17-55, but it isn't a $1300 lens either. Great performance for a fantastic value.
