    Karen Silkwood-martyred to protect big government and corporations.

    Based on factual events about a 'whistleblower' at a plutonium plant (Kerr-McGee) where many safety violations occurred jeopardizing the workers.and product safety. Names of some of the characters portrayed were changed in the movie because a lawsuit was pending by Karen's family against K-M. Based on later investigations after the initial finding of a 'single car accident' that suggested Karen fell asleep at the wheel or was impaired by drugs/alcohol strongly suggest that her car was forced/run off the road and into the culvert resulting in her immediate death.Independent articles written by investigating reporters also uncovered possibility of conspiracy of illegal sale of plutonium from this plant (and others) to entities outside the U.S. She was most likely contaminated with ...

    Great Performances by the 3 Stars; Great Supporting Performances too

    In 1983, Meryl Streep was just getting started as the brilliant, most loved actress that we know in 2011. But she certainly showed her versatility in this portrayal of Karen Silkwood--so different from Karen Blixen in "Out of Africa" in 1985 and Sophie in 1982's "Sophie's Choice." Karen Silkwood is a real-life unsophisticated Oklahoman nuclear power plant worker, who like Sally Field in "Norma Rae," steps up to fight corporate America when abuses are apparent in the workplace. In this movie Karen has two housemates--her boyfriend Drew (Kurt Russell) and her lesbian friend Dolly (Cher), who is in love with Karen too.     Silkwood

    Based on a true story Karen Silkwood lives a free-spirited existence with two friends who work with her at an Oklahoma nuclear facility. It's only when she discovers she's been exposed to radiation that Karen's conscience awakens, and soon she is digging for evidence of wrongdoing at her company. But her sudden zeal for safer working conditions may come at a high price as she alienates friends and possibly even puts her own life in peril.

    Excellent DVD and easy to use menu with great bonus features

    Excellent movie and great cast of actors. Excellent story and sad ending as with all great "take on the system" movies. MGM was smart for getting the rights to this story and making it into a class "A" film. Cher is at her best.

    Amazing Performances in "Silkwood"

    Meryl Streep portrays Karen Silkwood, who died in a car accident en route to a meeting with reporters from the New York Times. Karen supposedly had documents that proved the plutonium plant she was working at was not following the guidelines to ensure a safe working place. Kurt Russell plays Karen's boyfriend and Cher is their room mate. I have known for years that Cher was an awesome entertainer, but here she shows she is an actress! My dad bought me the VHS years ago. When I saw this DVD on Ebay, I had to bid on it! The picture quality is very sharp and clear, the sound awesome. The three main actors make you feel as though you are right there with them. A compelling, heartfelt film. A must see!
