Very much enjoying these earlier dramatizations of Jane Austen's works.
I was somewhat leery of buying used DVDs but so far there has been only one small blip in quality -- and that happens with new DVDs occasionally too. These early dramatizations of Jane Austen's wonderful stories lack the glitzy production values of later remakes, but the screenplays are well-written and the acting is top-notch. If you have seen only the lovely 2007 dramatization of Northanger Abbey, which I love, you will be surprised by this creepy earlier version. This set of DVDs was obviously recorded from TV. Poor picture quality, poor sound quality and no closed captioning available to at least be watchable and figure out what was going on.

The Jane Austin Collection
As a real Jane Austin fan, I was excited to purchase this collection. The BBC always produces such novels with the utmost attention to accuracy of text and detail. Very true here. My only comment is that occasionally the actors' voices, when they were far from the recording microphones, weren't loud enough or had a hollow quality, and the viewer was reminded that he was indeed watching a play. I also am a collector of music soundtracks, and these plays have only a minimum. Then again, one might argue that real life is hardly set to music! if u like the classics, and like older BBC adaptations, this is worth a look.
personally, once u get past the production value of the times, including the cameras, these are very well adapted versions of the novels. maybe i am weird, but i enjoy it. when it comes to ranking the adaptations i would place it as: 1) Pride & Prejudice 2) Emma 3) Persuasion 4) Mansfield Park 5) Northanger Abbey 6) Sense & Sensibility (great adaptation and writing, but bad cameras and budget)
