About this product

Product Information

SOON TO BE A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are intelligent children. They are charming, and resourceful, and have pleasant facial features. Unfortunately, they are exceptionally unlucky. In the first two books alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, a lumpy bed, a deadly serpent, a large brass reading lamp, a long knife, and a terrible odour. In the tradition of great storytellers, from Dickens to Dahl, comes an exquisitely dark comedy that is both literary and irreverent, hilarious and deftly crafted. Never before has a tale of three likeable and unfortunate children been quite so enchanting, or quite so uproariously unhappy.

  • Fantastic Series

What another great Lemony Snicket book! The Baudelaire orphans have found a loving home with Dr. Montgomery Montgomery and his collection of snakes. They can picture their lives full of adventures and coconut cakes until, of course, a series of unfortunate events rips that happy future away from them. I love the author's explanations of words for those readers who may not understand the vocabulary. And one of the most charming qualities of this book is that it contains one whole page containing only the word "ever" dozens of times. He is telling the readers to never, ever, ever, ever...ever, ever, ever, NEVER play with electricity. This book makes a great series for children who are slightly too young to appreciate Harry Potter.

  • Meant for kids only...adults just don't "get it".

I found the first 3 Lemony Snicket series books at a flea market and brought them home for my 2 sons to read (ages 8 and 13). Mind you, my oldest child is not an avid reader while my youngest reads books voraciously. They both loved the stories (even my "picky" reader). That speaks volumes to me! Snicket has tapped into what kids like. Although, I can see how adults find the stories repetitive and depressing...kids (especially boys) only see the drama and the crazy adventures that the Baudelaire orphans go through. To them, it is not unlike riding a roller coaster without leaving your couch. ***3 stars

  • Satire is always brilliant

Good satire is nearly impossible to find these days, unless you are willing to read old school authors like Mark Twain or Alexander Pope. As good as these gentlemen may be, they are no longer contemporary, and that's where Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) steps in. While this series of books may be aimed at children, it contains enough modern and literary satire that an adult would probably enjoy it more than a child. In fact, the generally gloomy and gothic feel of the book probably is unhealthy for a child without parental supervision, but is still hilarious and interesting. Each book is short and contains a repeating formula. However, unlike the formulas in Days of Our Lives or Friends, Handler uses the formula to his advantage and mocks the formula format and uses the differences ...

  • Exactly what I expected

Book came in great time and in good condition. Great read, love the series. Suggested for kids of all ages. Dark but humorous and courageous.
