    Synopsis
Excerpt from Our Lady's Dowry: How England Gained That Title When the first edition of this work was passing through the press, there appeared in The Month the first instalment of the collections of the late Mr. Edmund Waterton on the same subject, which, when completed, were republished, with a long introductory treatise, in a splendid volume called Pietas Mariana Britannica. I found with surprise that I had a fellow-worker in the 'Maryfield, ' and felt the most sincere regret that I had anticipated the publication of the fruits of his long and loving toil. Had I known that he was engaged on the subject, I would most gladly have given my own notes over to him, if they might have in any way increased his rich stores. He was entitled to be the Knight of Our Lady, as representing the old English Catholic traditions, and still more by the persevering industry with which he had devoted himself to her honour from his boyhood. Having placed my own book in the hands of the public, I was following with the deepest interest Mr. Waterton's 'Records, ' as they appeared in The Month, when to my great dismay, in the article on 'Walsingham, ' I read these words: Whose Dower it is England's glory still to be, notwithstanding, that recently, and for the first time, an attempt has been made to rob her of it'. I could not doubt that these words were aimed at me, for my book was called Our Lady's Dowry; or, How England gained and lost that Title. Surely, I thought, I have not deserved this. I have been glorying in England's old privilege, and seeking to restore it to her, and I am held up to the world as a sacrilegious robber, and even stigmatised as the first who has incurred this special guilt.
