    About this product

    Product Information

Clifton Webb stars in this lighthearted comedy as a patriarch who has more children than he can count on both hands. Along with his loving wife, played with dry humor by Myrna Loy, Frank Gilbreth must contend with the problems of five fathers. This includes a mass tonsillectomy and the eldest daughter's adolescent crises; her lack of a date to the school dance is solved skillfully by Dad, who takes her himself! Based on the true story of Frank and Lillian Gibreth's child rearing adventures as they were depicted in the book written by two of their children, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN is directed with a refreshing post-war optimism by Walter Lang. Though the huge family must be run with a workmanlike, though comic, efficiency, it is Dad's charm and love for his offspring keeps the family together.

The title has more meaning after watching the 1950's version!

After watching the 2003 movie, I looked into the story more and learned about the 1950 version. I ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED this movie, despite thinking I could not like something so old. The 1950's version is very different because it is true to the book that was written in 1948. It is endearing because the father had a strong personality, and was from a time when fathers' had authority in the home. FUNNY, HEART TOUCHING! I want to get the sequel movie, Bells On Their Toes.

      • Good old movie with morals.

Ordered arrived before the date stated, which is nice. The condition was a little better than anticipated and I'm happy about that! Great old movie, no modern day vulgarity. Good story, based on a true event (from the 40's). The soundtrack is a bit weak, could have used some remastering and added volume, but sufficient.

      • True life is often better than fiction!

Loved the book, and also this DVD! I once used this as a required reading assignment in my high school classes, as an autobiography was required and my students really enjoyed it! Most of them also had large families, and this was in the days of early development of electronic devices so there were many contrasts.

      • Good Family Film

I have almost memorized the book this movie was based on, and I remembered some scenes that were omitted and scenes where characters were combined so I wish it more closely followed the book. It IS a wonderful movie for families, though a little dated.

      • Clifton Webb Movie - Cheaper by the dozen

It was advertised as used and had some scratches on the disk, but it played perfectly, without a hitch. It was a good addition to my collection of Clifton Webb movies at a very good price.
