Auch die gemeinsame Kanzlei mit seiner Ex-Partnerin Marie-Luise ist längst Geschichte. Bis ihn ein Hilferuf aus Polen erreicht: Jazek, der gemeinsame Freund aus längst vergangenen Tagen und durchzechten Nächten, sitzt mit einer Mordanklage im Gefängnis und beteuert seine Unschuld. Vernau ist entschlossen, Jazek zu helfen, und reist nach Polen. Versunkene Gräber auf einem alten Friedhof sind die erste Spur. Verlorene Briefe und vergessenes Leid ziehen Vernau immer weiter hinein in den Strudel der Ereignisse des Jahres 1945. Flucht und Vertreibung, Ende und Neuanfang - damals kreuzten sich die Schicksale von Tätern und Opfern, und Entsetzliches geschah. Doch erst Generationen später steigt das Grauen noch einmal aus dem Grab, und wer sich ihm entgegenstellt, muss sterben.
