Im Oktober 1923, als Wieland Wagner sechs Jahre alt ist, erhalten die Wagners überraschenden Besuch in der Bayreuther Familienvilla. Adolf Hitler besucht die Eltern und den Onkel Houston Stewart Chamberlain, vor allem aber das Grab des Großvaters. Der aufstrebende Politiker pflegt eine ausgeprägte Leidenschaft für die Oper, Richard Wagner und die Idee des Gesamtkunstwerks. Mutter Winifred wird politisch aktiv und hält flammende Reden auf den Diktator in spe. Im Sommer 1925 erlebt Hitler am 28. Juli seine erste Bayreuther Götterdämmerung, er ist wie berauscht: Oper als Droge. Wolf, wie die Kinder Hitler nennen, ist jetzt Teil des Clans, ein väterlicher Onkel, der ab 1930, dem Todesjahr von Siegfried Wagner, zum Ersatzvater avanciert. 1945 liegt Bayreuth in Schutt und Asche. Wagner ist dennoch schon 1951 wieder als Regisseur und Bühnenbildner tätig und zusammen mit Bruder Wolfgang leitet er nun die Festspiele. "Neubayreuth" findet mit dem Motto "Hier gilt's der Kunst!" eine Formel fürs Vergessen. 70 Jahre später wirft der Musik- und Theaterwissenschaftler Anno Mungen ein Licht auf die dunkelsten Jahre der Festspiele sowie der Opernhäuser in Nürnberg und Altenburg. Er beleuchtet das Zusammenspiel von Krieg und Kunst, von Politik und rücksichtslosem Streben nach Erfolg.
