Simple, educational and inspiring Japanese quilt book
Raised in China as the child of missionaries, Kitty Pippen has a solid grasp of Asian fabric craft. Now residing on the Pacific coast of the US, she continues to find inspiration in the variety of Japanese fabrics available including cotton and silks, both of which she uses to great advantage. The book showcases her award-winning quilts, then shows you how to make them in a simplified version, even using non-Japanese made fabrics such as the Kona Bay line of Japanese-inspired cottons. The photographs are lively and colorful, the explanations helpful and detailed. She covers subjects such as kamon (family crests), shibori (tie dyeing) and sashiko, or the decorative white stitching often seen on Japanese folk crafts. The diagrams are clear and simple to use. That connection alone has certainly made this book one of my favorites, along with the many beautiful quilts displayed within.
