"Gabriel Garc a M rquez meets Umberto Eco meets Jorge Luis Borges for a sprawling magic show."-- The New York Times Book Review A New York Times Bestseller Barcelona, 1945: A city slowly heals in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, and Daniel, an antiquarian book dealer's son who mourns the loss of his mother, finds solace in a mysterious book entitled The Shadow of the Wind, by one Juli n Carax. But when he sets out to find the author's other works, he makes a shocking discovery: someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book Carax has written. In fact, Daniel may have the last of Carax's books in existence. Soon Daniel's seemingly innocent quest opens a door into one of Barcelona's darkest secrets--an epic story of murder, madness, and doomed love. A Book That Is A Love Letter To Books

This beautifully written book is a love letter to literature, which will likely charm avid readers. The writing is descriptive and poetic. Barcelona is beautifully evoked; I felt the weather and geographic scenes. The boy who is the main character, is fleshed-out, whereas several of the other characters are less dimensional. Books are highlighted in this magical story. Recommended.

  • A must read

I had never read any of this author's books but was immediately attracted to his style. While I found the story somewhat confusing in the beginning, at the end it all made sense and I finished the book in four night time readings; after that I ordered three more of the same author. It was recommended by my Dutch friend who read the book in the Dutch language while I ordered the English language version. The translation was very well done.

  • This is my ultimate favorite book!

I am an avid reader. I’ve read all types of books both non-fiction and new and old fiction. I take my time but I’ve read War and Peace, Les Miserables, Moby Dick, Anna Karinina and many more classic fiction. I also love book series like Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games. I saw a recommendation for this book in a Cancer support booklet and asked for it along with 2 others. But I found THIS book to be so exciting, passionate, and appealing that I’ve bought it for 2 of my friends. Each chapter ends with suspense and I finished the book in no time. The story and action takes place in Barcelona, Spain. This version of the book shows maps and photos of the city wherever the story takes the main character, pretty interesting. Love this book, plan to re- read it!

  • Mesmerizing

Simply put, this is one of the most intriguing and emotionally affecting novels I have ever had the pleasure -- and honor -- of reading. It is everything any serious piece of literature should aspire to, and more. I don't have to read Spanish to be acutely aware that this book's translation to English was impeccable and undertaken with great love, care and respect. It is a true tribute to both the author and his every intent. As I refuse to part with my copy of this book (a first for me), this eBay copy is being delivered to a dear friend in Mexico (also a first for me). Although one must neither a lender nor a borrower be, sometimes he is compelled by greatness to be a hoarder and a giver. And this is the greatest tribute I can give.

  • An Exciting Thriller With Something For Everyone!

The Shadow of the Wind is a well written romantic thriller with mystery abound. The book is about a young boy named Daniel who comes across an old forgotten book entitled: "The Shadow of the Wind". As Daniel searches for the more information about the book and its author, he becomes enveloped in a mystery full of suspense, romance, adventure, and tragedy. The story is perfectly placed in various locations in and around Barcelona Spain which adds a lot of authentic European flair to the mix. Carlos Ruiz Zafon does and excellent job of writing here and the English translation is perfect. If you like mysterious thrillers such as the Da Vinci Code, you'll love Shadow of the Wind. It's certainly one of the top fiction novels to arrive this side of the twenty-first century.
