About this product

Product Information

The New York Times bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet uncovers the essential message of Jesus, locked inside his most familiar parable. Newsweek called renowned minister Timothy Keller "a C.S. Lewis for the twenty-first century" in a feature on his first book, The Reason for God . In that book, he offered a rational explanation of why we should believe in God. Now, in The Prodigal God , Keller takes his trademark intellectual approach to understanding Christianity and uses the parable of the prodigal son to reveal an unexpected message of hope and salvation. Within that parable Jesus reveals God's prodigal grace toward both the irreligious and the moralistic. This book will challenge both the devout and skeptics to see Christianity in a whole new way.

Praise for Timothy Keller and The Prodigal God "Thrilling . . . Brilliant. Keller elegantly explains the goodness of God, redefining sin, lostness, grace, and salvation." --HeartsandMinds.com "An amazing, thought-provoking, illuminating work." --Examiner.com "The insights Tim Keller has about the two individuals in the story, and about the heart of God who loves them both, wrecked me afresh. Tim's thoughts deserve a hearing worldwide." --Bill Hybels, founding and senior pastor, Willow Creek Community Church "Explain, explode, expose, explore--all of these Jesus did by telling the parable of the prodigal son. In this book, Timothy Keller shows us something of how this story actually reveals the heart of God, and, if we read it carefully, our own hearts. This brief exposition is unsettling and surprisingly satisfying. Like seeing something as your own home, or your own self, with new eyes. Enjoy and profit." --Mark Dever, senior pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. "When it comes to the gospel of Jesus Christ, Timothy Keller is simply brilliant." --Mark Driscoll, pastor, Mars Hill Church and president, Acts 29 Church Planting Network "Keller will be remembered as a pioneer of the new urban Christians." -- Christianity Today magazine  "I thank God for him." --Billy Graham From the Trade Paperback edition., Praise for Timothy Keller and The Prodigal God "Thrilling . . . I was excited to find these books at such a good price and ordered 10. The package arrived very quickly, however, there were only 5 books in the package and not the 10 I ordered. Very disappointed. I did get a quick refund even though I asked for the additional 5 books.

    Misleading

I listed this compelling, but not in a good way. It is compelling to even lead away Christians who have some decent understanding of scripture. Keller is very popular these days in the "New Calvinist" movement. I don't want to discredit him as a Christian or a theologian but I am not comfortable with the liberties he takes with the parable of the Prodigal Son or the Lost Sons as he defines it. I am suspect of the redefining of "sin" and "hope"--the names of 2 of the chapters in the book. Definitions that the Church has been fine with for 2000 years. I think this book is a fine example of how well read academic Christians let their compassion for the lost overtake them to the point they are willing to side with the lost's criticisms of the church and the prodigals of the church and ...

  • Do you help "your" God to keep score?

I was so taken with the insights in this book that I read it in one sitting. Where the "Prodigal Son" story seems to focus on the lost son who returned, this book turns the scripture focus on our "Prodigal God" and the elder son who had remained loyal, yet who was the one who was truly lost in the end. He did NOT attend the feast.. --------------------------------------- I think every Christian would greatly benefit from this book to help them better judge where their own heart is in serving God and for a deeper understanding of His mercy. Do you feel/expect God to provide you with more blessings for living a more Christian life? or vice versus? I mean, do you help Him keep score on yourself or others? Would you do these things if it truly makes no difference? Do you understand the elder ...

  • The Extravagant Grace of God

This book has been such a help to so many people - to help us see our self-righteousness. Christians can be like Pharisees - and be so blind to pride in their lives. I know because I have been there and now I am more aware of it in my life. Timothy Keller is a very gifted teacher and brings to light the many ways we are deceived into thinking God owes us something - just like the older brother in the story of the prodigal son. Both sons were prodigals but the older son was so prideful that he couldn't enjoy the love and grace of his father. The father in the story loved both sons, but as Jesus taught in other places in the gospels, those who repent of their sins love God more. God's heart is open to the humble but he can't help the proud because they don't think they need his help - I ...
