Useful Book on the Zone System of Photography

This book is very dated but it provides very useful information for someone who wants to try taking and developing black and white film.

  • A straight forward guide to excellence in tradition B&W

IF your looking for a guide to getting consistent excellent results from B&W film this is the best single book I've found. The author: Fred picker was a student of Ansel Adams and carried on much of Adam's teaching on proper techniques for exposing, processing and printing B&W film. In the book Picker takes you step by step through establishing the processes to attain excellence in B&W photography. As the title suggests this is a workbook with exercises as well as theory. The strong points are it's easy to follow with good illustrations; if it has weak points they would be the references to Zone VI products the manufacture of which stopped shortly after his death some years ago. When Zone VI products turn up on eBay and in camera stores they usually command a premium price. Also be aware ...

  • Zone VI Workshop by Fred Picker (1974)

The true art of black and white photography is revealed within the teachings of men like Fred Picker and Ansel Adams. The Zone System, created by Adams gives one a true perspective of seeing the world through a camera lens, perceiving it in your mind and printing it to paper completing the entire process. The Zone VI Workshop by Fred Picker, gives the photographer a hands on experience using the rules set out by Ansel Adams. This book is a real treasure to have in your library if you are considering taking up photographer as either a hobbies or professional. The rules can be applied to digital photography as well.

  • Necessary Understanding to What Zone System really is

Understanding true Black and White photography is not complete unless one delves into mystery of the Zone System of light. With a good understanding of how to find your exposure value first and then your normal development, you can manipulate the various zones of light to accomplish creative expressions of your picture. However, one important point you must remember: you will need a 1 degree spot meter for accurately judging your shadow and highlight values. This book along with Ansel Adams "The Negative" is a good study and read in acquiring basic understanding of the Zone System.

  • Excellent book for the film photographer!

Great book, Fred Picker provides a very in depth and scientific approach to film photography that is still relevant today. Of course many of the things discussed are a bit out of date, but this is a great place to start to build your film photography knowledge base!
