Battlestar Galactica, one of the best sci-fi TV series ever broadcasted
I watched Battlestar Galactica in the 70s when it was first broadcasted and I found it fantastic. I rented it recently and I decided that HAD to buy it. What makes Battlestar Galactica so special is not just the plot, it is mainly the personality of the characters. Think about the charismatic, refined and dignified Commander Adama, invaluable military commander and spiritual leader, or the great warrior and hero Capitan Apollo, sincere and generous handsome man, with a fascinating, candid, sort of boy-ish attitude, whose fine intelligence coupled with a strategic mind, proved to be an essential and crucial complement to Adama’s leadership. If Adama is the military and spiritual leader of what is left of the “Twelve Colonies of Man”, Apollo is its “heart and soul”. His friend ... I watched Battlestar Galactica in the 70s when it was first broadcasted and I found it fantastic. I rented it recently and I decided that HAD to buy it. What makes Battlestar Galactica so special is not just the plot, it is mainly the personality of the characters. Think about the charismatic, refined and dignified Commander Adama, invaluable military commander and spiritual leader, or the great warrior and hero Capitan Apollo, sincere and generous handsome man, with a fascinating, candid, sort of boy-ish attitude, whose fine intelligence coupled with a strategic mind, proved to be an essential and crucial complement to Adama’s leadership. If Adama is the military and spiritual leader of what is left of the “Twelve Colonies of Man”, Apollo is its “heart and soul”. His friend Lieutenant Starbuck always watches over him and on several occasions rescued him from certain death, risking his own life. He did that in a spontaneous and instinctive way, without fear, without even thinking about the possible consequences he was facing. Apollo is his best friend and although Starbuck is, I would say, a little “unrestrained”, a gambler, heavy drinker and womanizer, he is also courageous, generous and a great warrior. The most evil character is Baltar, who organized a Peace Conference that was supposed to end the “Thousand Yahrens War” with the Cylons, a cybernetic evil species whose mission was to eradicate the human race. The Conference, a trap set up by “the great traitor” Baltar together with the Cylons, lead to the destruction of the 12 Colonies of Man. Throughout the whole series Baltar keeps showing his evilness and monstrous ambition, coupled with an inborn ability to adjust to every circumstance and turn every situation to his own advantage. Other relevant characters are Lieutenant Boomer and Lieutenant Jolly, loyal and courageous warriors, the “legendary” Commander Cain, belligerent and stubborn “warhawk”, incomparable strategist and risk-taker. Another charismatic character is Colonel Tigh, with his calm, hermetic and enigmatic “by-the-book” attitude, but always ready to undertake risks and even bend the rules if it becomes necessary. The only shortcoming of Battlestar Galactica is that some very interesting characters like Athena (Apollo’s sister) or Boomer, or Sheba (Cain’s daughter), who have great potentials for a much more proactive role, have been overlooked. Richard Hutch corrects these mistakes in his seven books, a sequel of the original Battlestar Galactica, where he gives them, especially Athena, much more prominence. I would recommend Battlestar Galactica to everybody. Even if you don't like sci-fi you’ll certainly enjoy watching the adventures of what is left of the 12 Colonies of Man: A RAGTAG FUGITIVE FLEET ON A LONELY QUEST, A SHINING PLANET KNOWN AS ...EARTH.

Legendary SF series from '80, who is remembered it when he was young must have this HQ DVD boxset and see GALACTICA again. Enjoy! P.S. But you may not compare it with nowadays achievements in Special Effects technology, it doesn't make sense...

I Bought this DVD because it was something I watched when I was younger and I enjoyed it then as I did now, I also Bought the new Battlestar Galactica Set.
