About this product

Product Information

THE LAND OF PAINTED CAVES concludes the story of Ayla, her mate Jondalar, and their little daughter, Jonayla, taking readers on a journey of discovery and adventure as Ayla struggles to find a balance between her duties as a new mother and her training to become a Zelandoni one of the Ninth Cave community's spiritual leaders and healers. Once again, Jean Auel combines her brilliant narrative skills and appealing characters with a remarkable re-creation of the way life was lived thousands of years ago, rendering the terrain, dwelling places, longings, beliefs, creativity and daily lives of Ice Age Europeans as real to the reader as today's news.

  • Not in the same league as the first book - Goodbye Ayla!

Having read all the other books in this series, I had waited a long time for this final one. After the gripping, innovative first novel, The Clan of the Cave Bear, Jean Auel seems to have pregressively lost her spark over the years. Nothing happenend in this one until about five chapters from the end. It was repetitive and had a 'padded' feel to it. Whenever a conflict was introduced and it seemed that something exciting might develop, it was always resolved within the next couple of pages with no real action. All in all, a bit of a disappointment but those who have read the rest of the series should probably plough through it so they can draw a line under it. I might go back and re-read the first one now, just to remind myself of what was so special!

  • Only bother if you need closure on the saga

I bought this book because it was the last in the Earths Children Saga. Have to say its been lightweight and boringly repetitive. I was looking forward to an exciting finale however....... My advice is skip the painted cave descriptions, skip the tedious introductions/ties of each character, dont try to remember each character as most turn out to be irrelevant. In fact skip to over half way and things pick up a bit and you wont have missed much of relevance. I may be being harsh but I've read some reviews that makes mine look like I think its in line for a Booker Prize. Empty your head and read it if you need to for closure on the series - and then start working out what YOU'd have written to finish the series properly!!

  • An excellent conclusion to an epic story.

Could not wait to read this book and was not disappointed! An excellent conclusion to an epic story.

  • A must for fans!!

A must read for fans of the Earth's Childrens series. This appears to be the last in the series, but hopefully not!!??
