About this product

Product Information

Sent to live with her grandparents in a quaint coastal Irish town, 10-year-old Fiona (Jeni Courtney) is fascinated by the village's rich folk culture--especially the local myths about a half-human, half-seal creature known as a selkie. Fiona becomes convinced that her supposedly deceased little brother is living with the selkies, and she travels to the beautiful, enchanted island of Roan Inish, where her grandparents once lived, to confirm her suspicions. Based on the book SECRET OF RON MOR SKERRY by Rosalie K. Fry, the film is the first John Sayles picture shot outside the United States. Although the magical realism of the film may seem like a departure for Sayles, who is known for gritty slice-of-life dramas, he has covered fantastic elements before (BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET), and has dealt extensively with the theme of returning to one's roots (BABY IT'S YOU, RETURN OF THE SECAUCUS SEVEN, and PASSION FISH). The film will particularly appeal to children and adults who grew up listening to stories rather than watching them on television, and the special effects--including a magical transformation of a seal into a woman--are meant to replicate the imagination of a rural child unfamiliar with the excesses of mass media. With its gorgeous photography and perfectly paced storytelling, THE SECRET OF ROAN INISH stands as one of the finest folklore-based films ever made.

"The Secret of Roan Inish" - a long-time love of mine...

This copy was to replace my personal one, that I had given to a friend, now a mother of two, who had loved the film when we first saw it together when she was younger than the girl in the story. I also sent one to another friend, a prominent filmmaker, as much because of the commentary by the auteur John Sales as for the enchanting story, He details the difficulties involved in filming this modern telling of a lovely Irish folk tale on that wild North Sea coast and especially of the brilliant solutions to those problems by legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler and other technical people. It's a gift for everyone from young children to film buffs and techie geeks! And the prices make multi-gifting easy! Get out your Santa lists, people!

  • A Mistifying Jouney of a Irish tale.

An absolutley intriguing "little tail". The background of the Irish countyside is simply charming. The actors played their roles with exceptional grace and determination, expecially the young ones. A real exception in films today. Family orientated, clean, and geared toward anyone with a sense of mystery and intrigue. I enjoyed this flick so much, I purchased it!. Have not seen a film which captivates the spirit of the Irish people since Waking Ned Devine. One drawback, the Irish Brouge is so thick you need to put on the captions, at least for the first viewing. Mistifying film!.

  • Aisling gael (Bright Vision)

Fable of Puirt a buile(by way of mouth)Irish storytelling about a child lost at sea and lives with the seals on Roan Inish told to a young girl who is encapsulated by a story told by her grandparents.Very well acted, wonderful music score, and a beautiful story takes you back to childhood and the stories of old told by grsndparents, and the stories you still dream of and still want to believe even long after you have grown up. Charming, warm and beautiful story set in beautiful ancient landscapes, remenants of and lost history and traditions which live only in story have you travelling, dreaming and longing to Roan Inish.

  • wonder, joy, love, adventure, and delight for all

I loved it!! it really brings to life the irish tales of the silky, and the music, the scenery, are incredible! It is a great family film. I wish we had more films like this one!! It has the joy, the undimmed sense of wonder, the adventure, and the deep sense of family and tradition the irish have. Get this for the whole family, especially the kids, and enjoy!!

  • Irish folklore

The scenery is just as compelling as the tale. If you love stories that include a little of the folklore of old, such as selkies, and location as beautiful as the west coast of Ireland, you will love this movie. Just a wonderful story,
