Synopsis
Poignant and personal remembrances, celebrating the lives of the World Trade Center victims. Few aspects of The New York Times 's coverage of September 11 and of all that has followed have attracted as much comment as "Portraits of Grief." A page or two buried deep in the B section every day for 15 weeks, the series profiled the lives lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center and has become a story in itself, becoming required reading for many, the world over. Beginning on Sept. 14, a half-dozen Times reporters began working from a stack of 100 missing person fliers collected from points around the World Trade Center site. They crafted profiles--stories containing short but signature details of the lives they strove to present. These portraits transcend race, class, and gender lines and tell of the old and the young, praising their individuality while at the same time cutting through their differences to capture the poignancy of their shared similarity: life cut short in an American tragedy. The stories have become a source of connection and consolation, a focus for the sorrow of readers both reeling from disbelief and searching for support. To paraphrase "Portraits" reporter Charlie LeDuff, there's more than one Ground Zero--there are thousands of Ground Zeros. Portraits: 9/11/01 , a collection of the over 1,800 profiles published in the Times , helps us visit them all.

    • Portraits by Gloria Emerson

This is a collection of obituaries that appeared in the New York Times-but it is really more than that. These are little snapshots of people who lost their lives on Sep. 11. I purchased this book to share with my class in an effort to put a human face on this tragedy. It honors the memory of these everyday people who were happy living their lives. Each short memory contains a small black and white photo of the individual. The book contains other black and white photos of that terrible day. It iss an excellent book but printed on paper that is not highest quality. I recommend purchase as a historical treasure trove of what was lost that day.

    • Awesome Sauce

This book is simply about “Heroes”, the people that persisted in 9/11.

    • Beautifully created masterpiece.

Beautiful book and an excellent way to educate the young children of America of why these people had to die that day in NY. It may just be a book of vignettes to some, but for those who actually had a hand in bringing to justice those who sucker-punched America on 9/11/01, its a portfolio of memories to know that these roughly 3000 persons did not have to die in vain.

    • Excellent Book!

Like the fact that all who perished on 9/11/01 were profiled, accompanied by their photos. Unfortunately, I knew someone who died on that day and was able to find his picture. This book impacted me greatly ... still difficult to realize that so many people, those in the Twin Towers, those at The Pentagon, those on various planes, and those brave and valiant police officers, firemen and others were killed as a result of terrorists flying those planes into the buildings. Quite sobering to look through the book, BUT made me realize that all of us can be here today and gone tomorrow. One thing is for sure; the United States of America is forever changed because of the events of September 11th.
