About this product

Product Information

This made-for-television movie adapts the story from the classic Broadway musical, THE MUSIC MAN. Professor Harold Hill (Matthew Broderick), an energetic con artist, convinces the citizens of a small turn-of-the-century community to form a boy's marching band -- which he plans to lead. However, he doesn't plan to fall in love, with the town librarian (Kristin Chenoweth). The wrinkle in his plan makes for much comedy, and the program features classic songs, such hits as "76 Trombones," "Ya Got Trouble," and many more.

    Another Music Man

I never thought I'd ever see another 'Music Man' movie besides the Robert Preston version. Along came Matthew Broderick's rendition and it surprised me. Excellently done and almost a rival to the Preston classic. One thing I always noticed in the original was the woeful lack of performers who were other than Caucasians. The Broderick version has a nice mix of Latino and African- Americans actors as a town the size of River City, Iowa would have. I fell in love with Kristin Chenoweth too and she all but outdid Shirley Jones as Marion. Recommend you seeing this and enjoying it as much as I did.

  • Great product! A Must See!

I love musicals and this one was particularly hard to get as it aired on TV. But this DVD is fabulous quality and beautiful to watch. And even though noone could ever top Robert Preston & Shirley Jones in the original movie....this was just as entertaining... almost like watching it from a different perspective but still wonderful. Kristen Chenowith won my heart in her portrayal as Glinda the Good in the Broadway musical "Wicked" and she shines just as brightly in this movie as well as Marion the Librarian. Do we even need to say anything about how talented Matthew Broderick is? Like Preston, it isn't his singing that makes him so believable as Professor Harold Hill, but his incredible acting and antics. All in all... a truly wonderful family movie. If you have never ...

  • One reason to see it.

There was no reason to make this movie. Matthew Broderick somehow wins awards for Broadway musicals without being able to sing. He is no Robert Preston. He sleepwalks through his role. Compare him in HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESSS...with Robert Morse and you will also note the same problem. He can be very engaging in comedies, but please stop the singing - it is putting me to sleep! Now, on the other hand, watch this for Kristen Chenowith. What charm and ohhhhhhh what a voice.

  • Great second take

Matthew Broadwick was a hit as Ferris Buller and he did it again as Prof. Hill. Just enough difference in interpretation. Great supporting cast. Not quite on the grand scale as the original.

  • A little better than the older version

The first time I watched this, I did not like it all too well... However, after watching it again, I liked it better than the version with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. Although Matthew Broderick was not as enthusiastic as Professor Hill, he was a fairly good singer and actor. I also liked the fact that the boy they used for Winthrop in this DVD had what seemed to be a natural lisp, so when he sang and talked it came out good. Hope this helps!
