About this product

Product Information

This early breakthrough comedy by Ron Howard is a rowdy, raunchy surprise from a Hollywood star known more for his wholesome fare. A mismatched pair of New York City morgue workers, hopelessly stuck working the night shift, decide to make a little extra cash during those long, late-night hours--they set up a call-girl service, becoming the funniest love brokers in the Big Apple. Henry Winkler stars as Chuck Lumley, a downtrodden pushover who unhappily endures a whining girlfriend (Gina Hecht) and a dead-end job at the morgue. But after meeting congenial hooker Belinda (Shelley Long), Chuck decides to help her and her friends organize their nightly endeavors. Michael Keaton, in his film debut, steals the movie as Bill Blazejowski, Chuck's manic, crazed assistant at the morgue. Chuck and Bill perfect their new roles as pimps until Chuck's romantic feelings for Belinda cause him to rethink his new career. NIGHT SHIFT was a HAPPY DAYS reunion of sorts for Howard: Former costar Henry Winkler (Arthur Fonzarelli) stars in the film, and HAPPY DAYS producers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel wrote the screenplay. NIGHT SHIFT also marked Howard's first collaboration with his longtime producing partner, Brian Grazer.

Night Shift could be any number of occupations, but I liked the setting of a "quiet" county morgue.

This is mature Henry Winkler until the Michael Katon character arrives at the morgue to "loosen him up." The cast of assorted hookers became totally engaging, especially Shelley Long's role.

  • Ron Howard's Early Gem: Night Shift

"Night Shift" is one of those cult classic sleeper movies that stands up well under the test of time. It had a decent run at the theaters when it was released in 1982, and then was shown widely on cable in the mid 1980s. Today it is somewhat of a time capsule. It showcases Michael Keaton, who went on to become a successful and versatile actor and Henry Winkler, who showed he can do much more than "Fonzie." Shelley Long is also delightful in the movie, even if she seems a little too pretty and sweet to be a hooker. The movie has many funny and quotable lines and sequences and it never, ever, ever takes itself seriously. It is a good movie to own because it can be watched over and over and still stays fresh. Had a tough and trying day? Just watch this movie: it will give you many ...

  • Night Shift (1999, DVD)

This was one of Howard's early directorial efforts (he even gives himself a Hitchcockian-style cameo in an alley kiss near the beginning), and one of his straight-out funniest. Many have commented on Keaton's top-notch breakout performance -- and it truly is one of the funniest supporting performances since Matthau's Whiplash Willie Gingrich. But, there are many other wonderful tidbits to enjoy thoroughly -- beginning with an incredibly clever script by Ganz and Mandell -- so many classic lines I almost don't know where to begin. Gina Hecht is also magnificently memorable in her supporting role as Winkler's neurotic girlfriend, and Nita Talbot is a gem as the domineering mother. Winkler is perfect as the understated nebbish lead, and the contrast of the low-income realities and the humor ...

  • This is a Really Great Romantic Comedy

I tend not to analyze movies. I just like what I like and we both loved this movie. Michael Keaton is a hoot, and all the characters were great in this romantic comedy. Definitely would recommend this movie to anyone who likes really great comedy.

  • Fun movie. Keaton kills it!

Cute little movie. Lots of T & A like it was in the 70s. Ron Howard was a young director. He was actually in one of the first shots kissing a young woman. Michael Keaton stole lots of scenes. Note Ron Howard’s younger brother makes a cameo. Fun all around.
