  • Good OPNsense firewall, just use a Broadcom NIC

This works as a good OPNsense firewall on 300 Mbps Verizon FiOS running a Tor non-exit relay (on a separate machine) averaging at 100 Mbps at any given time, but you have to be prepared to use a Broadcom NIC instead of an Intel NIC in this box. Intel NICs have freezing issues on the T730 with FreeBSD and FreeBSD-based OSes like OPNsense and pfSense, and that's why one star was removed.

  • Needs boot rom re-flash before you can use it.

Although the unit was in good condition, the fact that it had a custom boot rom installed made it useless until I re-flashed the boot rom with hp's latest binary.

  • T730's are the stronger end of thin clie...

T730's are the stronger end of thin clients. Since these are used, run memtest and mprime for a few days each to make sure they're functional and have adequate heat sinking. Used networking cards will need new thermal grease on the heat sinks (PCIe slot a major plus in the T730). Fans can have the dust blown out of them, but don't overspin them. SSD's can be unspaghettified by running multiple blkdiscard and /dev/zero passes at the device level. I'm positive for it's long term use as a firewall.
