Bringing John Berendt's international best-selling novel, MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL, to the screen must have been a challenge. The book is essentially an anecdotal travelogue of the fascinating city of Savannah, Georgia. The filmmakers decided to add a character, John Kelso (well played by John Cusack), a writer from New York, who's meant to represent Berendt's point of view. They also put most of the focus of the narrative on the murder trial of local millionaire socialite Jim Williams (the redoubtable Kevin Spacey). This is slightly problematic in that Kelso, a mere observer, now becomes the central character of the film. But director Clint Eastwood (straying from his usual milieu, and, atypically, not appearing the film) and writer John Lee Hancock still manage to capture the quirky spirit of the book. They're greatly aided in this regard by the lush images of cinematographer Jack N. Green and the detailed work of production designer Henry Bumstead, who create just the right atmosphere for the small city and its environs. The strong cast, including actual Savannah residents such as sparkplug transsexual the Lady Chablis, makes the film an enjoyable idyll in a strange yet welcoming place.

    Fairly true to the book

    At times I felt like Keven Spacey was too relaxed, but maybe that was how Jim Williams was during the whole ordeal. We will never know exactly what happened that night, but the movie does follow the book pretty closely.

    casting director cannot do it alone

    This movie relies too heavily on the casting of esscentric characters and ugly people dressed in formal clothing. The sets, landscapes and lavish accessories was also excessive as was Spacey's acting. This is not Superman Movie and required a bit more genuine human emotion to pull it off. Spacey shows none and the supporting cast isn't supporting either. The exception to this pretend drama: Jude Law was so good I did not recognize him until the credits!

    Enjoyable production of work by John Berendt published in 1994. This non-fiction film was produced by Clint Eastwood. The story is set around the murder trial of prominent eccentric socialite and respected antiques dealer Jim Williams (Kevin Spacey) in Savannah, Georgia. Williams was being tried for the shooting death of Billy Hanson, a part-time employee, and occasional lover. The movie begins when John Cusack arrives in Savannah to write an article about Williams's Christmas party for Town And Country magazine. He is introduced to Jim Williams at his home, Mercer House, which was the former home of singer/song-writer Johnny Mercer. This home was built by Confederate General Hugh Mercer in 1861.     The Garden of Boredom

    I intially bought this movie because I heard Jude Law and Kevin Spacey were starring in it, two exceptional actors; in addition John Cusack, also stars in the movie (also a good actor). This movie should have been good; however even this talented actors could not sustain my interest in this movie. First of all Jude Law is not in the movie long enough for true Jude Law fans, which I happen to be one of. Kevin Spacey although one of the best actors out there, could not keep my interest in this movie. It was long and overdrawn, and had no real plot in my opinion; all I really know is it takes place in the South, but the movie is all over the place and you are like "what the heck is this movie really about?" My mom is a die hard Cusack fan but even she could not see this movie to the end. I ...
