About this product

Product Information

In the fall of 1999, a twenty-two-year-old woman was discovered naked and bleeding on the streets of a small New Mexico town south of Albuquerque. She was chained to a padlocked metal collar. The tale she told authorties--of being beaten, raped, and tortured with electric shock--was unthinkable. Until she led them to 59-year-old David Ray Parker, his 39-year-old financee Cindy Hendy--and the lakeside trailer they called their toy box. What the FBI uncovered was unprecedented in the annals of serial crime: restraining devices, elaborate implements of torture, books on human anatomy, medical equipment, scalpels, and a gynecologist's examination table. But these horrors were only part of the shocking story that would unfold in a stunning trial...

Book was listed as 'very good' condition, but when it arrived the cover had stains, creases and folds, and a small tear on one edge. It was packaged ok and the packaging was not damaged, so this was not something that happened during shipping. I messaged them and they replied quickly and instructed me to initiate a return through eBay. I was refunded the full price in less than an hour. Great customer service!

  • A Shocking Story of Torture

Cries in the Desert relives the story of David Parker Ray and how he viciously tortured many women in his "toy box" dubbed torture chamber. The story is gruesome, and sick. Some readers will be truely shocked and disturbed. John Glatt wrote it well, but some details could have been left out in order to put in more information that would have made the read engrossing. I feel that the author put in too many detials that didn't fit the story, but it did work. I would highly recommend the book to fans of true crime!

  • Very Detailed, Excellent Book

John Glatt does an excellent job of providing a detailed account of the crimes of David Parker Ray and his wife, Cindy Hendy. Readers are also given an account of the crimes of Ray's daughter, Jesse Ray, and her friend Roy Yancy. However, the book focuses mainly on David Ray. This is tale of a sexual sadist and his urges to torture and rape women. Although never charged with murder, it is highly speculated there were many women he killed. This is an excellent book about deviant man. True crime fans will love it!

  • Not even the book I ordered!

I received a completely different book than what I originally ordered. Although I did download Cries In The Desert" on my Nook.

  • Excellent 'catch' to the actual true crime events

Ordered this book for review for a CJ class presentation. Specifics were given about the criminal events as they took place, which made the story line clear to follow. I rate this book excellent in writing presentation, as well as the true crime, which may be either directly/indirectly related to my past experience living in the southwest and knowing the area the crimes took place. Amazing facts were given about the characters. Never omitting information that is vital to the actual criminal events.

  • Unforgettable

As a long-time avid reader of true-crime books, I was completely stunned by this horrific story that takes readers inside the mind of 59-year-old David Parker Ray, a serial sexual sadist who beats, rapes and tortures with various implements his female victims in a tiny trailer dubbed the "toy box" in an isolated small town in New Mexico. His fiance, 39-year-old, Cindy Hendy participated in these horrific crimes. A remarkably unforgettable account of absolutely sickening sexual sadism you will be unable to put down from the moment you pick it up, and which will haunt you long after you have finished the last page.
