  • This is really more about antisemitism than aviation.

A litany of famous pilots and authors rave about it on the dust jacket, but I have mixed feelings about this book. The major theme running through it is the antisemitism that the author encountered during his WWII service in the Army Air Corps, and it is well described, if rather repetitive. I really didn't need to read about circumcision or animal slaughter for kosher purposes in graphic detail: those descriptions detracted substantially from the narrative about flying P-38s in North Africa. I enjoyed the flying aspects, and I have immense respect for what the author endured, serving the USA during WWII, but I honestly can't recommend it as an aviation story due to all the (for me) extraneous and largely irrelevant content.

  • Great Book!

Great story of a WW2 fighter pilot in Africa and Italy. The book shares the thoughts and feelings of a young mans adventure in traveling, his discovery of the love of flying, and how personal battles and wars against predjidism were as important as the battles that the nations were fighting. The frustrations of trying to co-exist with some of his own countrymen, the concern for how his actions will effect his family, and his tallent for drawwing and art, all show a contrast in his creative personality and spirit against his job of destruction as a fighter pilot and Ace. A gret story!

  • GREAT Book by even greater author/hero!

Inside, personal story of decorated WWII Army Air Corps pilot. Excellent read! Truly one of the Greatest Generation!

  • Read this as a novel and not as an autobiography.

A good read for a good value.
