Mr. Peretti is one of the best Christian fiction authors I've ever read. I love trying to guess where the story will take me next.

I loved the suspense, of course, but I also very much enjoyed the fact that I had to actually use my brain. This wasn't a book to just sit down and relax with a warm cup of cocoa. I had to keep thinking the whole time. Who's the good guy? Who's the bad guy? Is this truly a 'demonic' presence or is this all in their heads? As a Christian I was also pleased at how the 'light' was used at the end of the book. This would be a great book for a non-believer, as well, just for the story itself. My only negative to say about this book was the unrealisticness of it. Like when the walls of the house start moving... but it did add to the story. I bought this book for personal reading. It intrigued myself and my husband because we have several other Peretti and Dekker books. When we saw that they were ... A Fast Read, Not Too Bad, But....
The book was a VERY fast read, and I like thrillers, esp Christian thrillers, which are so very hard to find.... I loved the symbolism of good vs evil, the human heart vs holiness...but the problem I had was that Ted Dekker never likes to come right out and say "Jesus Christ is THE way, THE truth, THE light and THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN". Which is absolutely neccessary. SOooOO....the ending is some wishy-washy Dekker-style of 'salvation' for those who survive the House in the end. I was disappointed that the writers were so vague with who Christ really is.....this IS, after-all, a CHRISTIAN NOVEL. As for previous review-writers who claimed the first 25 pgs to be a blood-bath and "non-Christian".....THIS IS ABSOLUTELY N O T TRUE. There is NO blood (except a SCRATCH on the back of one ... Rather, it is vague and leaves the amount of 'goriness' up to the reader's imagination.....Actually that's not even quite right, all blood (except the scratch and one's palm is cut and glass cutting a person's head....covered by a strip of cloth) is NON-EXSISTENT. There is some smoke though....I'll let you readers discover that little mystery out while you read it for yourselves. To the previous review-writers who alleged gore, etc, I wonder if you even truly READ the book House...or if your review was based on what the friend of a cousin's friend who told a coworker who passed a note to one who pet the neighbor's dog who heard it could possibly be about.....well you get the idea.....Next time, get your facts straight. If you didn't like the book, but never even finished it: DON'T WRITE A REVIEW !!!!!! The plot WAS a little predictable, but the writers provided quit a few twists and turns to keep it interesting to the end. I would recommend this book to: 1. those who appreciate Christian thrillers, 2. are Ted Dekker fans, or 3. those who are walking the fence. Happy Reading!!

LOVE IT or HATE IT ???
HATED IT! I read this in one sitting, in an afternoon. I picked this up at a resale shop (thank goodness, because if I paid list price for this, I wouldn't been upset). I read all the previous reviews and I have to wonder if most of the reviewers even read the same book as I did! Good? NO. A page-turner? Only to hurry up to get to the end. Clear message? NO. The characters of Leslie, Stephanie, Jack and Larry were so cardboard and without any interesting characteristics that I couldn't identify with any of them. Jack, who was supposed to be the one who "understood" or seemed to be the "most pure" for lack of a better phrase, didn't have any depth other than to run around and try to save the female characters. Did the survivors really come to understand what went on? I didn't really ... HATED IT! I read this in one sitting, in an afternoon. Did the survivors really come to understand what went on? I didn't really understand- the supernatural force became the image of what people think a demented serial killer looks like (White)? Why did White talk about Life as if he were a human? The inbreeds were lesser demons put in the game to torture the human players and these demons embodied people that the players were familiar with, played out situations which illuminated the players' sins..... The house and its contents were illusions to the players until the end when they saw the house and its furnishings as they truly were, a comparison to the way we create a self to show the outside world, but in reality we humans are base, sinful creatures that must turn to the light in order to be safe. So many loose ends, though- the book ends without any kind of exposition to try to help the reader. The ending was so predictable after running around in circles, with characters saying the same thing over and over....I would have like to believe that Jack and Stephanie were a couple at one time, but their interaction was stilted, even as a couple on their way to divorce. If you want to be confused, or like solving puzzles (or not really solving them), then maybe this book is for you. Unanswered questions are fine by me, but I'd at least like to understand the underlying currents without being fed only riddles for answers, as the character of Susan does at the end. I had read neither author before this book. I will try to pick up some of their other books just for some comparison. Awesome Book!
I love how ted dekker and frank perreti came together to make both their twisted minds work to make a single masterpiece! This is one of the best books I've read in a long time beacause both the authors captivate your mind every minute, so sometimes you just don't want to put it down. The only thing I dislike about it is the basement section is very long, well written, but long and mabe the authors could have put a little more suspense outside of the basement, in the main house, than just in the basement. I give the book two thumbs up and I suggest everyone who finds this book , buy it and read it.
