After merging hard rock with Jimmy Buffett-style pop-country on 2006's Livin' It Up!, Sammy Hagar mostly returns to his straight-ahead roots on Cosmic Universal Fashion. While the title track employs touches of electronica and "23465" harks back to 1980s Fishbone-style funk metal, "Psycho Vertigo" and "Peephole" are classic Red Rocker fare, chock-full of metallic guitar and Hagar's distinctive wail. Though ultimately not as consistent as 2002's return to form Not 4 Sale, Cosmic Universal Fashion shows that in 2008 Sammy Hagar was in no danger of mellowing with age. ~ Pemberton Roach
