Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean) is the leader, with General Ourumov (Gottfried John) an additional threat. Sizzling Bond babe Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen) is the sleek robber who, with Ourumov, successfully steals the Goldeneye, which the villains plan to use in their quest to control financial markets around the globe. However, this grizzly group of scoundrels is no match for Bond, who constantly outwits their attempts to assassinate him. Bond rescues the tough and lovely Natalya Simonova (Izabella Scorupco), who was caught in Trevalyan's deadly web, and she eventually helps Bond turn the tables on his foes as he uses his quick instincts, innovative weapons, and cool gadgetry to save the day.

The first thing one must always remember when it comes to a Bond film is... well... that it's a Bond film! (Seriously... one sentence you will never hear applied to a Bond film is, "And the Oscar goes to...") That being said, Pierce Brosnan's first turn as 007 was not half bad. All things considered, I loved that the movie immediately established that while the whole idea of a British Secret Agent, really should be a vestige of the past... (After all, the Cold War over, the once mighty USSR in shambles...) The movie makers have given new life to the old ways by showing us, there will always be another madman in the world ready to do harm and make life difficult. So it turns out those Super Spies really do have a place among us, who else can we count on? From the first Bond film forward, ... The first thing one must always remember when it comes to a Bond film is... well... that it's a Bond film! The plots are flimsy most times, the stunts are cool, often stupid... but cool. I could go on but face it, that's what makes them good! Who wouldn't want to take a tank out for a joyride? Or blow up a train? Or suddenly have the opportunity to make a grown woman lust over a man and stop and make love immediately! All happening just after having been missed by 1300 rounds per second of ammunition as they scamper miraculously away? As Bond movies go, the action was it's usual glitzy self. Some scenes were definately 'groaners' but over all they were pretty cool. The storyline? I give them a B for effort in setting up the future of a post Cold War James Bond. I thought it was funny that Joe Don Baker came back as a good guy (well... as good as a CIA agent can be as a good guy!) The women were as always, beautiful. (I myself, would truly love to find both the the make-up brand and hair sylist that could get me through one of my a rough work weeks, much less all the Bond mayhem and still look that good!) So, I guess the women? A. The gadgets? A The action scenes? B-. The snappy wit and droll remarks of 007? B-. Now on a rating scale? I chose to rate them like this; Dr. No was hands down a solid 100 (But I'm a little jaded... there was a time I would have eaten bees for Sean Connery's Bond! Oh, who's kidding who? I still would!) And the worst one ever being A View To A Kill. (That's about a -32.) So... a new James Bond, a semi-beliveable storyline, some interesting action scenes, one very, very twisted lead Vixen and of course yet another lovely, doe-eyed Good Girl... I have to give GoldenEye a solid 70! The Special Editions Extras aren't half bad either. Sometimes it's fun to get to see the "Behind the Scenes" moments. I enjoyed it for what James Bond movies always are and what they will forever be... Mindless, suspension-of-disbelief, "You-make-the-popcorn-and-we'll-veg-out-for-the-next-couple-of-hours"... tongue in cheek entertainment!
