A Martial Arts Classic
The "36th Chamber of Shaolin" is a must have for any self respecting Kung fu movie collector. This film takes martial arts fans inside the legendary Shaolin Temple, birthplace of Kung Fu. This masterful Shaw Brothers classic inspired 2 wildly successful sequels and influenced an entire generation of filmmakers. When Manchu invaders ravage a defenseless village, one wounded and desperate student seeks refuge at the secretive monastary of Shaolin. Fueled by wrath, he undertakes a grueling program of martial arts training that hones his strength, agility, and endurance, in order to defeat his enemies. Aside from the mindless fight scenes, the real beauty of this movie is the rigorous training these Bhuddist monks must undergo, that has nothing to do with fighting, but instead, ... For example, at the Shaolin Temple, the students must jump across a pond filled with floating logs, in order to get to and from the mess hall. Then the next step is to carry buckets of water up a hill with the arms held straight out, while knives are strapped to the elbows. These are but 2 of many fascinating methods shown in this movie that prepares the Monk by developing his concentration, then finally the actual combat techniques begin, but only when the Monk shows his superiors that he has developed a colossal degree of mental stamina. These preliminary exercises are what sets the Shaolin apart from other martial arts practitioners. The mental discipline required to defy normal laws of physics. An excellent movie and a real Martial Arts Classic.

My opinion this movie highly over rated, the picture quality is good but the movie itself is boreing not enough action & fight scene for me, just my opinion

THE Quintessential Kung Fu Movie!
Where to start? A young mans home is destroyed by bad guys, so he runs off to train kung fu so he can wreck holy vengeance upon his enemies and smite them good. And he does, in the most awesome way possible. Before he can defeat his enemies, however, he must pass through the 35 chambers of Shaolin and forge himself into an unstoppable kung-fu killing machine (yeah, I know Buddhist monks do not kill, but hey, it's a movie, deal with it). If you like martial arts movies (Matrix, Equilibrium, Jackie Chan, etc.) then you'll LOVE this. Note there is violence, although all of the blood in this movie looks like ketchup or red paint, so it may not be suitable for younger children.Where to start?
