About this product

Product Information

Steven Spielberg's EMPIRE OF THE SUN, based on the autobiographical novel by J.G. Ballard, stars Christian Bale as Jim Graham, a British schoolboy separated from his upper-class colonial parents when the Japanese sweep into Shanghai during World War II. Temporarily orphaned, Jim attaches himself to Basie (John Malkovich), a fast-talking American opportunist determined make a buck off the spoils of war. Later, when the two are interned in a prison camp, Jim's boyish fantasies are fueled by the grace and daring of the Japanese fighter pilots whom he comes to idolize despite their enemy status. Spielberg's visually spectacular wartime epic is a testimony to the human will to survive and a child's ability to find wonder even in the midst of horror. Thirteen-year-old Welsh actor Christian Bale is brillant as Jim in his feature film debut. Spielberg himself identified more with Jim, a boy who is obsessed with flying and who experiences the death of his innocence, than with E.T.'s Elliott. After a year of negotiations with the Chinese, Spielberg and his crew were allowed to film in Shanghai, which was virtually unchanged since World War II.

Better than described. Very much like new, disc and casing flawless. Great price. I appreciate sellers like this who take care of their items, and I receive it exactly as described “like new”. Some sellers describe “like new” and when I receive it they have scratches and or finger prints on them, damaged case, etc. So I very much appreciate the high quality from this seller. Thank you so much = ) Seller HIGHLY RECOMMENDED A++++++++++++++++++++++++i

Compelling content

The content is compelling. The story takes place during WWII. The characters all try 2 deal with WWII and its aftereffects. It features Christian Bale in quite the role that made him compelling to casting directors. It also features John Malkovich and Miranda Richardson and was directed by Steven Spielberg. Plus, the main character is compelling and not unintentionally unsympathetic. Recommended for Spielberg fanatics and Christian Bale fans.

  • Surviving the Japanese occupation of Shanghai, China

This is a classic Steven Spielberg film that my family and I first saw in the 1980's when it appeared in theaters for the first time. Christian Bale, of American Psycho and Batman fame, plays the main character, a boy who is separated from his parents after the Japanese seize Shanghai. John Malkovich plays an American expatriate who is doing dirty deeds with the black market in Shanghai. This movie has always touched my heart perhaps because I am the mother of sons and the boy in the movie is very bright and highly imaginative. I have watched this movie between 15 and 20 times and I just never get tired of it. Each time I watch it I discover something new about it. I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

  • Very good show!

    I really liked it.
