About this product

Product Information

Starting with the band's origins in Forest Hills, Queens, END OF THE CENTURY: THE STORY OF THE RAMONES gives a fascinating background portrait of the eccentric group of individuals who came together to be one of the most influential punk bands in history. This documentary about the New York City renegades who made their mark in the mid-1970s with counterculture lyrics and underground performances at rundown joints like CBGB on the Bowery, shows how the band eventually earned recognition, even being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. But it is the insider look at the blue collar upbringing of the band members, and their desire to be part of Manhattan's burgeoning hard-rock scene, that is most endearing about this particular film. In candid interviews with Dee Dee Ramone, he tells stories about the group's total lack of complexity in its earliest days. Going to see contemporary acts like the New York Dolls and Iggy and the Stooges, the Ramones quickly created their own sound and practiced frenetically. When they finally made their debut with an extremely loud sound, furiously fast and short songs, and lots of drama such as blatant on-stage arguments, they practically scared away their fans. While other stars, like Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, comment on the Ramones' subsequent rise to punk stardom, providing wild stories about sex, drugs, chaos, and tragedy, it is the truly interesting story of the band's start that will linger in viewers' minds.

  • This is the complete story of the World Famous Ramones

As a teenager growing up in Queens New York in the late '70's and early 80's, to my friends and I the Ramones were "our" band. We would see them every time they were back in town, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhatten, Long Island, it didn't matter. What mattered was Joey and the boys were home. I bought this DVD because I wanted to know the whole story behind the band. This DVD gives you the history of the Ramones as well as the personal view point of Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, Tommy and Marky. (As well as CJ and Richie). I learned about their interpersonal relationships, as well as their personal deamons. The live concert footage brought back the days of screaming "Hey Ho...Let's Go" until I lost my voice. I would have liked to see a bit more of this footage added to the DVD, as a good majority ...

  • I've known these guys since '76, This bio sums their lives up pretty well !

This DVD is a great introspective of the lives of a bunch who revolutionized the punk scene in America. Those who saw them as many times as I have (over 50), remember the good ole days when Joey had to sit out (or pass out) while 'the band played on'. Sorry they didn't mention the day at Irving Plaza (NYC) when Phil Spector tried to get Joey up the 40 stairs to what was a 'backstage' area, by telling him, "one more step Joey, one more step", for EVERY step there was! When Joey almost made it to the top (balcony area), Phil and security guys asked us to, "give Joey some room folks", but while they let go of him for a few seconds to tell us, Joey had turned around and went 3 steps back down! They had to grab him, turn him around, and start over again. Funny and really revealing. That ...

  • Well Done Documentary

This is a very well made documentary of the legendary Ramones. Lots of revealing interviews (old & new) with all the band members. The extras are all interviews but very lengthy. It has some great live clips of the band from very early ones to modern. I would have liked to see some more complete live footage of the band, especially the early stuff, but what can you do? Still a great film, worth picking up.

  • The story of the Ramones..

this is a story of a group of guys who made music history in the 1970s. I saw this band in 1978 live. So it was good they got the recognition they deserve.

  • They started a movement...

Deep review and commentary of the band that lead a movement. A new genre that they would not compromise.
