About this product

Product Information

Eastern and Western cultures and philosophies intersect in this comic drama from acclaimed director Jim Jarmusch. Ghost Dog (Forest Whitaker) is a silent modern-day warrior who lives on a rooftop shack. He spends his days breeding pigeons and playing chess in the park with his best friend, Raymond (Isaach de Bankolé), a French-speaking ice-cream man. At night he goes to work as a hit man, performing his tasks stealthily and invisibly, abiding by the codes established by HAGAKURE: THE BOOK OF THE SAMURAI, an 18th-century text. One night, while on his latest hit, Ghost Dog encounters a mob boss's beautiful daughter, Louise (Tricia Vessey). Although Ghost Dog leaves her unharmed, her father nonetheless orders Ghost Dog's execution, to the dismay of Louie (John Tormey), his loyal retainer. As the mobsters struggle to locate the mysteriously untraceable Ghost Dog, he must find a way to protect himself while remaining loyal to Louie and the ancient codes that define him as an individual. Jarmusch successfully tackles a variety of genres with GHOST DOG, including mob movies and spiritual samurai films. Fusing all of this with the RZA's thumping, atmospheric score, GHOST DOG remains another lighthearted, entertaining addition to Jarmusch's impressive filmography.

  • biased? perhaps

i liked this movie. it had elements of a mob gangster movie with some old school japanese samurai/ninja movie. forest plays a self made samurai/hit man in the service of a low ranking mobster. the main character's bushido philosophy is narrated by forest through out the movie. if you can grasp a self made samurai defending his "lord" placed in an american urban setting you'll really like this movie. the character developement of forest's character does has some holes. everything he learned is self taught and his reading give him his philosophy's. the movie progresses well and has some excellent fight scenes. i hope my reveiw can help you out. be warned i am a bit of a sucker for samurai movies, but not so much for the mob.

  • Ghost Dog

I have been looking for years for two of Jim Jarmusch's films, Dead Man and Ghost Dog. I finally decided to try ebay and wow, I have a neat source now for all my desires! I bought both of them. Ghost Dog is an excellent film. Forrest Whitaker plays a modern day hit man that lives by the code of the Samurai. I love the way he travels almost invisibly through the scenes, reflecting the duality of life as we know it. I like the way Jim used the dog to bring in the Native American symbol of loyalty, and the homing pigeons as a way to convey the loyalty to home, the free flight of the birds underscored the invisibilty of Ghost Dog and the tie of the birds to their home underscored the 'bound by honor' tie of Ghost Dog to his master. I also liked the way Jim portrayed the passing on of culture ...
