Effortlessly blending drama, nature documentary, and ethnographic film, THE STORY OF THE WEEPING CAMEL weaves a magical tale about a nomadic Mongolian family who reunite a rejected baby camel with its mother. When a mother camel refuses to sustain her child, the keepers of the camels often reunite them in a ritual with folk music and chanting, the results of which elicit deep emotion--even causing the mother camel to weep real tears. Exploring more than just traditional ritual, this film speaks to the very nature of love--the baby camel cannot survive without his mother, just as no animal or person can.Directors Byambasuren Davaa and Luigi Falorni drew upon the documentary style of Robert Flaherty (NANOOK OF THE NORTH), who recreated events to comprehensively portray his subjects. The pair tirelessly filmed spontaneous events for much of the mother-baby story, but chose to recreate certain moments in the family's daily life. A particularly humorous and insightful example involves a young boy who clearly feels conflicted between his family life and his desire for a more Western life. The film creates a contrast between the two, showing the boy listening to traditional fables in his family's tent, but then dreaming about owning a television. This spare film provides a visually enchanting and unique learning experience.

    Story of how they cared for the unloved camel calf was deeply moving, and I loved learning about nomad life in current day Mongolia.

    The Story of the Weeping Camel

    This movie gives an inside view of a Mongolian family in the Gobi Desert. The main action revolves around a mother camel who, due to a difficult birth, has rejected her infant and the efforts of the family to keep the baby camel alive and reunite him with his mother. In addition to this story line, the viewer is given an opportunity to see the family's lifestyle and traditions. This was filmed in the native language so subtitles are necessary. A very interesting film if you enjoy learning about other cultures. I bought this film on the recommendation of someone who had seen it and liked it. I was not disappointed.

    A lovely film for your entire family.

    A tender and touching film about a Mongolian camel and its' owners family. When a first time mother camel gives birth to and rejects her colt, the tender and loving concern of her owners uses traditional methods of prayer and music, as well as gentle human care, to attempt to get the mother camel to nurse her colt. The owners family, their individual roles within the family, and the ways in which they relate to each other, in a society which is slowly and somewhat reluctantly changing.

    only if able to play here on a normal DVD player

    Was not very happy at all - did not realise that international DVD's could not be played on the normal DVD player only on the computer also the same applies to DVD Coming Home am pleased I had seen The Story of the Weeping Camel at a Cinema - a wonderful story of what is happening in the world with technology completely changing lives of people who were previously happy with their lives - just a shame I am unable to play on a decent screen - under different codes - just warm people who might be thinking of purchasing internationally - no sympathy from suppliers!!!!
