Rise and fall of the Shi'ar empire? Happy 4 smackdown!
First off, I think this should have been sold as "Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire" and not "Divided We Stand", but what do I know? Overall, I really enjoyed the story. There were elements of it that I hated, that totally took away from the story. But the artwork and storyline itself made up for the one or two low points of the story. I loved the artwork. It totally rocked! I'm not so much into the manga stuff and other alternative forms out there; I prefer the more realistic approach of artists like Finch and Hitch. Deodato is up there as well, in my favorites category. The artwork is excellent. The inks and colors are superb. It really helped add to the story. The character development was good. I liked how Havoc came into his own, stepping out from under the shadows of both Scott and Corsair. The outrage that was expressed by Vulcan was very believable. I loved the line where one of the X-Men says, "That's the problem with you telepaths - you think you've known somebody forever and in reality it's only been a couple of hours" (or something like that). It was a great line (unfortunately, I'm writing this without my book in front of me, otherwise I could quote it word for word). I liked how Vulcan schemed his way to the top if the Shi'ar hierarchy and then took care of business with D'ken. The thing I hated most about the book was Xavier. The best part of the Ultimate universe so far is Ultimatum #2, where Magneto snaps Xavier's neck and kills him. I'd love to see that happen in the "real" Marvel universe. Xavier has lasted long past his time, and the way he reacquires his telepathy is a joke. The Mkraan crystal is a veritable force of nature, capable of destroying (or altering) reality as we know it. Phoenix had to enter it to repair it in order to save creation. Nate Grey used a shard from the Age of Apocalypse to save himself and enter the 616-marvel universe. Xavier is thrown into the crystal in hopes that it would kill him; instead, it restores his telepathy. I don't know; it just seemed like weak writing to me that Xavier couldn't have been more fully explored without his mutant abilities. I think I would have preferred that over giving him his powers back. One thing I did like was how Marvel Girl attacked Xavier a little bit for using her and her telepathic abilities in ways that were morally ambiguous and how it was now "okay." I know I probably sound blood-thirsty, but it would have been nice to see Gladiator die as well. Or get sent home with his tail between his legs. I can't stand the guy. It was great to see the rest of the Imperial Guard getting their heads handed to them by Vulcan; it've been nice of Gladiator could've been included. I hated seeing Corsair die. I realize it had to be somebody who would have a huge impact on Havoc in order to insure he would remain in space to try and reign his brother in, but still. Still, I think it would've been more realistic if some of the "minor" characters (like Ch'od, Razah, or even Polaris) would have been either seriously injured or killed. I think it would have added to the story as well as overall character development. It would be nice to see Vulcan be "rehabilitated" and all the Summers' bro's together, but that's obviously not going to happen. Too bad. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and it's sci-fi element. Totally cool.
