Restricted by the laws of heaven, the gods had no choice but to sit back and watch the humans of Earthland destroy each other, their wars never seeming to cease. One day, however, the powerful Gaia had had enough. Along with six disciples, Gaia exited heaven in an attempt to set things straight on Earthland -- or so he led his disciples to believe. Upon his dissension, Gaia became greedy for power, summoning an army of monsters to parade with him throughout the entire world and locking his disciples into one of the many new magical towers he had constructed. After his home, friends and parents were destroyed by Gaia's army, a 15-year-old human boy named Iros felt helpless. "If only I had more power!" he exclaimed in frustration. As though hearing his cries from heaven, a globe of light presented itself before the boy, bearing with it a magical pendant with the power to free one of Gaia's disciples. At last Iros had a chance to avenge his losses and free the rest of the world from the oppression of Gaia. In Master of Monsters, it's up to you to assume Iros' role in choosing which disciple to free and lead an army of summoned monsters against the forces of Gaia. Among your choices are Necromancer, Summoner, Justice, Warlock, Fortuner, and Shadowmaster, each with his or her own strengths and weaknesses, usually relating to fighting ability or magical powers. Once your leader is chosen, your quest to destroy Gaia begins. On a hexagon-based battlefield, you have control over the monsters summoned (e.g., soldiers, magicians, neophytes, unicorns, rocs, elves, trolls, fairies, etc.) and their movement across the battlefield. The higher a leader's ruling power, the more monsters can be summoned. Positioning a warrior onto one of the many unoccupied or enemy-ruled magical towers can increase ruling power. After the leader of the opposing army has been defeated, you have won the battle and are one step closer to defeating Gaia. As your warriors battle across the game's 13 types of terrain, they will gain experience points, leading to advancement in experience levels. After certain levels are achieved, the warrior can also graduate in class (e.g., a soldier becomes a knight). When at a monastery, two monsters can even fuse together to become another entity. However, this is not always a favorable action as the results can yield anything from a powerful dragon knight to a useless slime. Defeat Gaia and free Earthland. Only then will you be a true Master of Monsters.

Some Good/Some Bad
I bought this game because my wife and I absolutely loved the Genesis, Master of Monsters game. It played like a good game of chess and required a lot of strategy. An unheralded gem of a game. This game however is not that game. The good: It is recognizably a graphic update from the Genesis version though with more of a Anime feel. The controls are more clunky and less intuitive than the original but not a deal breaker. It has more options than the original and you can turn off the fight animations and other time wasters to speed up the game play. Has potential as a multi-player game. The bad: There is a bug that will prevent your monsters from hitting even if they have 90% chance to hit. The only thing you can do is move your monsters and not bother to fight as they ... The AI is very stupid and simply heads straight for your summoner. No flanking, no trying to take out your more strategic and leveled monsters. Hopefully it gets better the higher your level. As far as I can tell you do not keep monsters from one level to another instead the game gives you different choices depending on the level. One of the great things about the original was that you leveled monsters over the course of the game and tried to "nurse" them along because you had so much time invested in leveling them. Conclusion: Over all a good title for strategy buffs who like a challenging game of chess with fantasy elements. If you are expecting the tight game play of the original, then move along fanboy, there is nothing to see here.

Good gameplay if you can stand the cheese...
The gameplay of MOM is actually really good if you like the turn based strategy type games. There are many different types of creatures to play around with and an option to "mix" creatures although I was never able to make anything useful except the golem. The story, voice acting and grammer in the game are just plain horrendous. (There is a pretty cool opening cinema. No one speaks, thank goodness.) If you can avoid letting these problems grate on your nerves, there's some fun to be had.The gameplay of MOM is actually really good if you like the turn based strategy type games. not what I hope for.
I decide to buy it because I played Illusion of Gaia for snes. I hoped it would be similar to it. It wasn't, I would discribe it as more like a final fantasy tactics game. I took a risk and bought it to try. I rated it below average because it seems to be very slow, and difficult to play. I don't know who made it because, the makers of the game illusion of gaia made it as a spin off of two other games. Why did they call it gaia? I guess the name gaia can be used for any kind of game by any maker. This older game is great for building your forces and statically defeating your opponent. By taking over towers to build a larger army and using different monsters to move around the map.
