  • The Stork Club

At a bargain price and starring Betty Hutton and Barry Fitzgerald I was already interested before even seeing it. This is a deliciously improbable bit of fluff that has some cute moments in it, with billionaire Fitzgerald being saved from drowning by hat check girl Hutton. The billionaire's bumbling -and anonymous- attempt to "help her out financially and bring her happiness" causes eyebrows to raise, suspicion and romantic troubles with her boyfriend. Hutton tries to help and take care of what she believes to be a homeless and hopeless Fitzgerald and get him on his feet, and he plays along with her confusion so he can see how his attempt to help her is working out. It was cute and quite charming! The movie is just a little bit longer than would have worked best for it. It seems like the ...

  • Typical '40s Screwball Comedy

I purchased "The Stork Club" with Betty Hutton because I'm fascinated by the history of the world-famous Stork Club in New York City. I didn't have any expectations about the film and that worked out well.. The plot is weak - a typical "poor [girl] gets rich and then mayhem ensues" theme - and the performances are just as lukewarm. Ms. Hutton is better known for her later performance in the film "Annie Get Your Gun" and for good reason; she's less polished in The Stork Club and not at all believable. The quick moments inside the actual Stork Club are fantastic but if you do not have any interest in 1940s Americana, then skip this film.
