Like most mid-1960s British Invasion rockers, the Kinks started out as an R&B group before venturing into sardonic, Beatles-esque pop and quintessentially English rock operas and concept albums. This documentary offers a critical review of the Kinks' recorded output during their early years--from their 1964 formation to their 1970s stint with Arista Records--through rare live performance clips and interviews with critics and musicologists. An accompanying booklet offers a song-by-song analysis of every studio album between 1964-1978 alongside archival photographs.

First and foremost, I am a serious fan of the Kinks and of Ray Davies, in particular. There is so little of them on video that I buy all I can find available. That is what prompted me to buy this dvd.Now,for the dvd itself.It contains not only video clips of numerous songs from past tv and video concerts, but is heavy with music writers criticisms of each song performed here. there are 4 critics and they each weigh in with their opinions and actually give a star rating to each song.The music is worth the price of the product,even at retail,but the critics are a bit much and fill up too much air time. It could have been much better had they let the music play uninterupted for the hours worth and then ctitic them .Instead of between each and by all 4 each time.The dvd is complete with a book ...
