About this product

Product Information

This book provides a detailed survey of the Korean language, covering its speakers, genetic affiliation, historical development, dialects, lexicon, writing systems, sound patterns, word structure, and grammatical structure. It is designed to be accessible to a wide readership, and provides a wealth of data in a user-friendly format that does not presuppose an in-depth knowledge of the latest linguistic theories. It will be used by general linguists and Korean linguists who are interested in the typological characteristics of the language from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives, and by undergraduates and graduate students in those disciplines who seek a comprehensive introduction to the linguistics of Korean. Likewise, advanced students of the Korean language and language educators will find it offers valuable insights into lexical, phonological, morphological and syntactic aspects of the language for their purposes.

  • Great buy

For a linguist, this book is an excellent overview of the Korean language. It's not a textbook but a diachronic as well as synchronic treatment of the subject. I consider myself lucky to have gotten it at a very reasonable price.

  • Great Book if you want to learn the language structure and history of study

This is 418 pages, with an introduction and 9 chapters. The best chapters for me were Ch. 8 titled Word Structure, and 9 Grammar Structure. The prior chapters were also good, providing a history of the study of the language, and other background. They rarely, if ever, use any Korean letters, and instead use the Romanized words, and sometimes I don't recognize the word, but that has been ok. The analysis of the word structure and grammar are superb. It ends with Chapter 9's end, no conclusions or anything, so comes off as a scholarly work. I was initially disappointed, but read much of it on a flight to Seoul, and was amazed at the great background. I need to go back and outline Chapters 8 and 9, and expect to learn a lot more, e.g. about parts of speech, etc.

  • It is an older version. There is a newer version out with a CD. However, it works just the same.
