This is an adaptation of Rosamunde Pilcher's best-selling novel, with the same title, that's sold over 5 million copies. Director Piers Haggard's film depicts the nuances that make the novel a sensational story. Credit is due to "The First British Lady of Cinema," Vanessa Redgrave, for delivering a superb characterization of Penelope Keeling, the protagonist. "Shell Seekers" traces 3 generations of her family through her no-time-for-nonsense perspective. Born an Artist's daughter, Penelope Keeling was a key subject of whom her father made some of his best sketches & paintings. Her atypical London Bohemian childhood, followed into the sea side of Cornwall. Keeling reflects back upon an unpleasant WWII marriage & being a single parent of 2 ... After discovering that her father's art work is worth a small fortune, her 2 greedy children push hard to make her sell the paintings hung throughout her home. Most especially the one called, "The Shell Seekers." Disgusted that they'd even suggest she give up the wedding present her father made of that painting she's in as a girl, Keeling makes plans & travels to Ibiza in the Mediterranean, to a coastal paradise, where Olivia, her boyfriend & his teenage daughter live. When Keeling's ready to return home, Antonia, Cosmo's teenage daughter, accompanies her. With the teenager there to help her, they become close enough to hold lengthy conversations. Keeling is particularly focused upon the man she loved once her husband was gone. Her memories come back in bits & pieces, switching between the WWII era 1940's & the present. She talks of her unhappy marriage to Ambrose; raising 3 dissimilar children; & being in love with Richard, the romance of her life. Keeling's past passions, heartaches & aged secrets threaten to be repeated by Antonia as she begins to fall in love with a unknown young man, Danus. Keeling wants for them to learn from her mistakes. Meanwhile, the discovery that "The Shell Seekers" painting is so valuable causes her adult children to pressure her not only to sell it & give them the profits, but also to search the house for her father's sketches. Once all of her children come home together, Keeling recognizes that she's going to have to make the decisions about how to properly manage her estate while she still can. The choices she makes are the very crux of the story. I can't imagine anyone but Vanessa Redgrave acting the role of Penelope Keeling. Clearly, it is her acting eloquence that makes "The Shell Seekers" an exceptionally great watch. I'm looking forward to viewing it for the 3rd time. Like Bette Davis had the effect of achieving, Redgrave carries the rest of the cast up to the heights of her leading acting abilities. Doing so benefits the quality of the entire film. It takes an exceptionally empowering lead actor to elevate the integrity of a film's performances like Redgrave is capable of doing, time & again, now. And, she's barely of senior age at 71yo. in 2008. Long may she live & play the lead in film~

The Shell Seekers
I bought this version of the movie, "The Shell Seekers" starring Vanessa Redgrave so that I could compare it to the book by Rosamund Pilcher and the other rendition of the movie starring Angela Lansbury. Another reason I bought it is that I couldn't find it to rent. Even the library couldn't find it for me on inter-library loan. I was therefore, very pleased when it came up on E-bay for a reasonable price. I might note that until I found this one listed on e-bay, most of the DVDs of the Vanessa Redgrave version were in European format and this one was USA. I liked this movie because it stayed true to the nature of the book with a few minor story line changes. The scenery and backgrounds were incredibly like those I imagined from reading the book. Vanessa Redgrave ... Lovely Seaside Setting, Cinematography, Story & Acting
The title of this movie suggests that it has something to do with the ocean. What is the most important aspect of this film. Vanessa Redgrave plays the lead, a family's matriarch, who's faced with an unexpected discovery that leads to family turmoil. What is priceless is how the character Miss Redgrave plays handles this situation. It's easy to advise practically anyone to watch this movie.

Vanessa Redgrave aptly plays that matriarch who has major choices to face and make. On the one hand, her money-grubbing grown up children have become all attentive to her now that the car's out of the bag about their grandfather's artwork's monetary value. On the other, she has an affection for the familial history depicted in her father's art that must be preserved and publicly displayed. What I'm a big fan of in this film is the kind of woman Vanessa Redgrave portrays. She's no doormat, no dummy, no victim of circumstances and not a person who shirks the heavy responsibility that's been left as ...
