Set six months after the end of the original Gears of War, the single-player campaign follows Fenix and his COG Delta Squad as they lead the way in humanity's desperate counter-offensive against the Locust, a last-ditch effort to destroy the subterranean scourge where it lives. Players embark on squad-based first-person shooter missions in a desperate assault against an enemy that has no mercy, nor should be given any. New abilities and weapons help in the fight. Portable shields make it safer to advance through open spaces, and when a proper shield is not handy, a fallen enemy can be used for portable cover. Weapons such as the "Mulcher" machine gun and the "Scorcher" flamethrower leave their mark on the destructible environments, as well as on Locust enemies. <br><br>Expanded support for co-op play allows two to play through the main campaign together, with support for easy drop-in and -out play, and the option for each teammate to use a different difficulty setting, allowing a veteran COG commando to play alongside a newcomer to the series, and both to still enjoy the right level of challenge. The game also offers a new "Horde" co-op mode, in which up to four players together struggle to fight off wave after wave of increasingly difficult Locust attacks -- battling for high scores, and perhaps even to reach the rumored, final 50th wave. In all, the sequel features eight modes of online multiplayer play, including the two-man team "Wingman" mode, a meaty twist on capture-the-flag, called "Submission," in which the "flag" is a computer-controlled character, and "Guardian," a variation of the original game's "Assassin," in which each team receives unlimited respawns until its designated Guardian is killed.

Great game and great story.
Fun game to play either 2 player or single. Decent game length as well. Graphics are good, controls are slightly different from other fps.....but easy to learn and get used too. Bought the other games in the franchise also.

Good Sequel to the epic first person shooter
Story: Gears of War 2 is the sequel to the futuristic apocalypictic first person shooter by Epic Games in November 2008. This tells the story of how humans colonized the planet Sera and were using the resource called ammution which you can think is oil but they disturbed the creatures who lived underground and now are in a war with them. At the end of the first game Marcus (soldier who went awol and in military prison who was given another chance for freedom by joining COG again) defeats the Locust horde general and it seems that they might win the war. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case sense the Locust are sinking cities and trying to sink the last Human stronghold: Jinato and thus bring humanity to extinction. Gameplay: Similar to Gears of War where they re-introduce the ... Story: Gears of War 2 is the sequel to the futuristic apocalypictic first person shooter by Epic Games in November 2008. Also, with downloaded content there is a new score system which rates you on how you kill the Locust Horde. Control: Control for the most part is solid; although I would say that at times targeting is a not quick sometimes when trying to defeat an enemy also the fact of reloading when you need to kill the enemy is something that most gamers do not want when playing the game. The game controls are good and this is shown immensely when you play the game. Overall: Gears of War 2 is definitely a good sequel to Epic Games highly ranked product that reintroduced a unique style of first person shooter. This is a definite game for people who like first person shooters and the current price tag should make people to be able to get this game for a reasonable price. This game keeps the good working old formula while showing the player new features that make the game more appealing for gamers and better muliplayer which is something beyond the single campaign if you decide to want to play beyond the single player campaign.

More of the first game...a lot more.
For those of you who have played the first Gears of War, your biggest disappointment with the game was probably the short campaign. Rest assured that this game delivers what feels like a campaign whose length is comparable to the campaigns of similar-type games. The campaign feels like it was designed more with the focus of playing co-op instead of just being thrown on (which I felt sometimes with the first game) and it is a lot of fun, whether you are playing by yourself, with a friend or online and the addition of the Horde mode is a nice touch. Now, no game is perfect so here is what I felt were some faults with the game: the game feels easier than the first game. Not saying that it can't be challenging enough for some people but it seems like this game did not make me struggle in ... The levels also don't seem as varied. Once again, when I played through the first one, I felt like the story progressed and led you deeper into enemy territory and there were unique levels (like the mine cart level, the mansion, power plant, etc.) that each offered something different. With this new game, the levels all look great but they lack the same kind of uniqueness to them. I am not saying that the developers didn't try to have unique levels (I think they did), but the levels just all come off as one of two types: either a standard get-to-this-point level or an on-rails shooting mission. Arguably, this same thing can be said of the first game (and maybe it is just how fresh the first game felt when it was first released that has left a lasting impression on me) but it feels like the levels in this game are either the same underground level or the same rubble-ridden open space. Perhaps I am comparing the game too much to its predecessor. So for those of you who have not played the first Gears, let us take a step back and try to see how the game holds up on its own. The game looks great graphically. It has a solid campaign (both in size and substance), fun online games, and ultimately it is worth the price. Even though the game has its shortcomings (one of which is a disappointing final boss battle), I still would recommend this game. It is just great fun and can be found fairly cheap now that Gears of War 3 is out. I hope this review has helped gain some insight for those of you who were unsure or on the edge about this game and have fun.

This game is great fun to play, but is only a slight improvement on the original. Gameplay is similar, as a duck & cover 3rd person shooter. Host lag advantage has been minimized, however actually getting into a multiplayer pub match can take a very, very long time. The game is in desperate need of a patch to solve the slow matchmaking process. The single player campaign is great fun, reminiscent of the varied and exciting content of the second Halo. Co-op play is seamless -- friends can drop in or out with ease. Controls have not been changed significantly from the original. The truly wonderful thing about Gears 2 is the achievement tracking. Every time you make progress toward an achievement, an on-screen indicator pops up, letting you know how far you have yet to go before earning the ... It must rank up there with Halo 3, Shadowrun, and The Orange Box when considering what is available on the Xbox 360. (My friends would also add CoD 4, or Rainbow Six: Vegas, but those are not my cup of tea.) Should you rent or purchase? Here's the deal: if you like shooters, buy it. It is a very good game, with plenty of varied play experience. The matches are fair, the maps abundant, and the bugs are minimal. Also, if you buy, you get bonus maps and other nifty content. If, however, you are on a limited budget, or you are only a casual shooter, try it first. I have become very tired of waiting to connect to other players and other teams in matchmaking -- a process which often allows me to run to the restroom, have a cigarette, and goof around on the internet between matches, with plenty of time to spare. I also don't think the gameplay has changed dramatically enough between the first and second features. Sure, you can use downed players as 'meat shields,' and all that, but its essence is Gears 1 with some new bells and whistles. Which is fine if you are a devoted fan. For others, like me, I want more out of my Gears 3 and Halo 4 experiences, when they inevitably come out.

Same game, same story, same action, but now THEY CAN HELP ME IF I FALL.......if they want to. Yes the game AI let me die many times as I screamed for help and many times I WAS AT THEIR FEET AND THEY WATCHED ME DIE!!!!!!!! Nothing really changed in the story except now they tired to make it more cinematic with riding big baddies instead of just dying when they stepped on you. A few more weapons but nothing is better than the Chainsaw gun and the cover system (while they said they improved it) is virtually the same but a bit more effective......at times. I still hit the ground many times feeling that I was well covered, but the new feature that gives you a few seconds of life for a teammate to help was helpful.......on both sides. Reloads are still annoying but add to the tension. ... Same game, same story, same action, but now THEY CAN HELP ME IF I FALL.......if they want to.
