These two films are based on the popular 1970s British cop show THE SWEENEY that follows the exploits of maverick detectives Jack Regan and George Carter, members of Scotland Yard's plain clothed Flying Squad. SWEENEY! finds D.I. Regan and D.S. Carter curbing their steady diet of alcohol and loose women long enough to take on a case that begins with the death of cabinet minister's mistress and ends up leading them into a conspiracy that seemingly goes beyond the law.In SWEENEY 2, Britain's toughest cops are given one last order by the recently disgraced Chief of the Flying Squad: find and take out a band of armed robbers who are terrorizing London. Soon, Regan and Carter learn that these are no ordinary crooks and their investigation leads them deep into the criminal underworld where the detectives must sort their way through beautiful women, crooked cops, and the government of Malta before a final showdown with the heavily armed crooks.

"Police Story" UK-style, for the big screen!
Two great films. "The Sweeney" movies/TV series are not typically on the radar screens of most Americans, but should be. Not your ordinary plots, so the outcomes keep you interested to the end, these movies increase the realism and tempo a notch from the TV series. Also shows a great deal of humanity, these aren't statues in the Scotland Yard museum, but in the end, men with great devotion and drive, even if they seem at times a little "bent". The end of "Sweeney 2" is how I would picture DI Reagan and and DS Carter, as they ride off into the sunset (no spoiler intended, I'll say no more.) I became interested in "The Sweeney" because of its mention in the (Original) UK version of "Life On Mars." The only complaint I have is typical for a Yank: Americans and the Britons are definately ... Two great films. This isn't your hoity-toidy BBC Commentator nattering here: but an open mind rewards the viewer with solid stories, well acted, defines the genre for the 70's and sets the bar high. This is "Police Story" UK-Style.
