Professional gunfighter, Clint is another gunslinger in which those townsmen have already hired three previous gunfighters. But the gangster bandits have killed every gunfighter, gunslinger & hired protection. Western background, Clint will prove to be the hero in the end (there may not be any other actor who could have pulled of this role). I only rated 4**** because there was some slow time in middle of film for about fourteen minutes. I also thought the rape scene was too far acted out.

But his recipe for defense is kind of like a deal with the devil when the town offers him anything he wants-in order to do the job. Even his most energetic supporters named Mordecai (played by Billy Curtis- The Incredible Shrinking Man) and Sarah played by Verna Bloom (The Journey of Natty Gann, Honkytonk Man, The Hired Hand, Medium Cool, etc) start to wonder just what they signed up for. A great gun-fighting filled end to the movie adds to the flix. This movie will kind of make you forget Westerns as they are typically--and start to think of ... The director is Eastwood also ( Changling, Gran Torino, Million Dollar Baby, Absolute Power, etc.) and he has gone on to do both great acting and directing as everyone knows. This was his first directing effort, and it definitely shows the talent for the job. A great movie that lovers of Westerns, Classics, Action and some suspense devotees will enjoy a great deal. A excellent movie that most will enjoy and it will fill a evening with entertainment.

Clint Eastwood is the Man With No Name who just rides into the remote little town of Lago,in the salt flats of 1880's Utah. He is mysterious and when confronted by three cowboys who are looking for trouble, he walks away, but they persist and are all shot dead in a matter of a few heartbeats. All of a sudden the composure of the whole town changes. There had been an incident in this town a couple of years earlier where three men who worked for the local mining company were accused of stealing and sent to the Territorial Prison. They claimed to have been framed, and swore to return and kill everybody and burn down the town just as soon as they are released. The mine owners and towns people had been paying the three dead cowboys to protect them for the past two years, just in case the ... Now, the day before they are to be released from prison, their protection is dead. They offer the job to Eastwood, and tell him that he can have anything he wants, ANYTHING! The three who are being released, also killed the town marshal a few years ago too. They beat him to death with bull whips while the entire town watched, but did nothing to help him. Well, Eastwood takes the job, free clothes, whiskey, saddle, boots, and takes his fun with a couple of the towns women, one of the mine owners wives, and the other the wife of the hotel owner. He makes the men practice with rifles to defend the town, but they are sure that Eastwood will easily dispatch these guys. Before the three arrive in Lago, Eastwood has everybody paint the whole town red. Now everybody is about fed up with Eastwood and several of them try to kill him, but it backfires on them, leaving several dead, and the hotel demolished by dynamite. When the men arrive he lets the town suffer at their hands for a while, but eventually Eastwood kills all three of these guys. There isn't much of a plot or much information provided. You can deduce that the murdered sheriff was Eastwood's brother, and his actions were revenge to punish the cowards for doing nothing. The owners of the mine were also punished by the men that they framed. This was a good movie, but also strangely complex.

To set the record straight this is NOT a spaghetti western. This was made in the USA NOT Italy. All of the actors are English-speaking ... there is no dubbing, etc. John Wayne was very angry with Clint for making this movie. Wayne felt that Clint was deviating too much from the good-guy cowboy image Wayne cultivated. OK, for the movie itself. The town is Lago, 1800's, a mining town, set on the Pacific Ocean (probably). Clint rides into town. What we find out eventually is that Clint is there for a purpose, but the townsfolk think he is just a gunfighter/drifter. They hire him to protect the town against three ex-cons just released from prison who they believe (rightfully so) that the three will return to Lago to reek havoc. Without giving away the movie and the ending, we find out in the end who Clint really is, in one of the shortest but most powerful western movie scenes ever. This movie is first rate, one of the TOP 10 westerns of all-time. The cast is superb, (the late Billy Curtis as the little person, Mordecai, steals the show), and the movie town is probably more authentic as to what the old west towns were really like than any other western movie town. This movie must be seen several times, at least, to fully appreciate the entire film ... from the squishing sounds made by Clint and his horse as he intially rides into town to the powerful scene at the end where we find out who Clint is, and he rides off into the horizon. IF you are a Clint Eastwood and/or a movie western fan AND you do not own this film, shame on you. BUY it and devour it! By the way, Billy Curtis, in 1938, was the star of one of the oddest westerns ever filmed, Terror in Tiny Town. With an all little people cast.
