    Sony STR-DA5500ES

This is an excellent receiver. I have a 5800 (it's big brother) for over 10 years and have been very pleased with it. However, the tuner section (AM & FM) could use performance improvement for selectivity and sensitivity. The new receivers normally do not have a headphone jack or front speakers, set B. I was very disappointed that the remote control (clicker) was missing from the package. I have yet to find a replacement.

  • SONY STR DA5300ES. "Awesome receiver"

I just purchased a new Sony Bravia XBR 52in. LCD TV. I started doing research on receivers that have HDMI inputs, since everything is going to HDMI. I wanted a Sony because of its quality and reputation. I had a Sony 5.1 receiver before this one, and I loved it. I started going on the Sony website and looking at their ES line of receivers. I fell in love with them because of their video upscaling and also there number of HDMI inputs. Mine has 6 HDMI inputs, and one output. Its got awesome power, and one of the best features being able to have an on-screen menu GUI mode. It is very easy to use, and also to set up. I recommend this to anyone that is looking for a high quality receiver. The price was a bit expensive, but you get what you pay for, when it comes to high end good ...

  • Best Receiver on the market

Before i give my general review, a few disclaimers: I own a Sony 65" hi-def TV, a Sony PS3, and a Sony CX777ES 400 disc DVD changer, and was upgrading from an eight year old 895 Sony receiver. That said, I know that Sony is no longer a guaranteed great buy. Many of their products are mediocre, forcing you to buy the upper echelon of their range in order to get the features and quality they were once known to provide with each and every product that once happily rolled off their production lines. I bought the 5300ES for a few reasons; Six, yes SIX HDMI inputs, the second to none graphical user interface, which is nearly identical to that on the PS3, and the bulletproof compatibility with my other Sony products. Currently, I have a pair of Pinnacle Black Diamond BD1000 speakers up front, ...

  • Sony STR DA5300ES

This unit is a replacement for a STR DA30ES(circa 1999), which has served me well without any repair problems. I hope this one does the same. That goes in the den now.... The unit has a great many features, one of which is up converting old analogue to 1080P resolution. This feature works so well, I am not sure I will buy a blu-ray unless DVD dies out altogether. It even makes analogue 480i cable look good! Digital channels look great! HD, well, it even makes the 1080i look better still! The menu is very easily understood, once you find everything. The auto speaker set up does a great job of setting the speakers for different seating areas. The sound is wonderful. My only gripes with this unit are 1) that there are no longer any switched AC outlets. The 12V triggers are nice, but if ...

  • Everything you'll need in a receiver and MUCH more

This receiver has really too many features. That's never been a bad thing and you are really getting one of the best home theater receivers available. The main thing I was looking for in a receiver was 1080p up-conversion and HDMI pass through. This has PLENTY of HDMI ports and I can't imagine someone needing more than what's provided with this piece of hardware. One thing you'll need to keep in mind, which was a question I didn't have answered until after the purchase, is that the receiver will not up-convert from the HDMI connections through it. It simply passes through. I hate having all the wire mess that accompanies home theaters, but was forced to input component cables through it to upconvert my digital cable signal. Setup was pretty quick and easy. I have the VPL-VW60 ...
