In 1990, coaches Sean Porter and Malcolm Moore took the Kilpatrick Mustangs--a football team of hard-core juvenile offenders from California's Camp Kilpatrick juvenile detention center--through their inaugural season, in which they reached the regional championships. In 1993, an Emmy-winning documentary, GRIDIRON GANG, aired on U.S. television. In this fictionalized version of the same name, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stars as Porter, the coach who uses sports as a means to instill self-esteem into a group or boys for whom crime is a way of life.A former troubled youth who used football as a means to stay off of the streets, Porter, along with Malcolm Moore (Xibit) now presides over Camp Kilpatrick, where the inmates are gang members, murderers, and drug dealers. Among them are Willie Weathers (Jade York), a gang member doing time for a botched act of revenge. Showing that old rivalries hold true even away from the streets, fellow inmate and rival gang member Calvin Owens (David Thomas) won't let Willie forget that they are sworn enemies. But once Porter introduces football as an outlet, the common goal of winning unites them in ways that no one expected. Sports films are not known for harboring O-Henry-like twists at their conclusions, and GRIDIRON GANG is no exception, but director Phil Joanou (STATE OF GRACE) keeps the proceedings gritty (especially for a PG-13 rating), giving us not only the uplifting and exciting football sequences, but also a handful of heart-pounding--and somewhat graphic--scenes of gang violence, and former Yes member Trevor Rabin's effective score is a nice alternative to the typical pop soundtrack. Not all sweetness and light, GRIDIRON GANG is fine addition to the realm of cinematic sports, leavening the sap with a copious counter-dose of realism.

As I stated in my review of WWE Films "See No Evil"., w/WWE Superstar Kane as the psychopathic killer., I again stress that WWE athletes have proven repeatedly that they can make powerful acting performances., given that WWE wrestling is scripted acting as well. These undiscovered talents finally took notice when "The Rock", (Dwayne Johnson), broke through Hollywood's closed gates., and transitioned from Sports-Entertainer to Actor., and delivered big. These brief clips have an emotional heft that only adds to the uplifting momentum we carry at it's closing. - This is not just a film. Great Movie
I am a former Juvenile Officer and worked in a detention facility. While it had several differences, this movie showed a lot of the emotions and troubles that youth offenders go through while detained. Roughly based on a true story, giving the kids an activity that showed them leadership, teamwork, and other useful and important life skills the movie was great. I've shown this to kids in my facility and all have responded well, there were great opportunities to discuss several of the characters problems, histories, and other issues, some kids were able to relate, others just liked the football aspect.I am a former Juvenile Officer and worked in a detention facility. Fantastic Movie!
This was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time!! I rented it to make sure I liked it and now I know that I will go out and buy it! It was a very entertaining movie, good actors, great storyline, even tho knowing it was true life. It was refreshing to watch a movie where there were hero's, and people who learned to care about one another through life's odds. And another plus, no sexual undertones and no nudity. Nice to see a movie that you can watch with your teenagers on a saturday night without having to worry about sex and nudity and one that teachs a message to all of us. If I had to put any cons in the movie, I couldn't find any!!This was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time!! Sean Porter (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson") is a probation officer that helps runs a detention Center full of juveniles with a history of crimes like gangs, murders, and much more and he wants to make a difference in there lives by making them better people by giving them something to care about, and to try and keep them from going to prison once there adults or even worse end up dead, and with the help of his co-worker Malcolm Moore (Xzibit) they start up a football team for the boys in the detention center which teaches them alot, and most important discipline. He test these boys to the fullest, and they learn to become fine young men. This movie is based on a true story, and it is truly a great movie and it is nice to know that there is someone out there ... This is a very inspiring movie.
