"Just tell it to call you Billie!"
1982's 'Creepshow,' directed by George Romero, written by Stephen King and featuring special effects from Tom Savini, is an 80's classic that few dispute. By now, I think everyone knows the five stories featured in it, and that the framing story revolves around the titular comic book. But how many people know there actually was a comic? Creepshow the movie is based off of the old EC Comics like 'Tales from the Crypt' and 'Vault of Horror,' so it made sense for them to release a one-shot trade paperback containing comic book versions of all five stories in the film. The artwork is simply gorgeous, done by Berni Wrightson (who also illustrated the King novels 'The Stand' and 'Cycle of the Werewolf'), and the narration for the "Creepshow Creep" (a sort of stand-in for the Cryptkeeper) is ... 1982's 'Creepshow,' directed by George Romero, written by Stephen King and featuring special effects from Tom Savini, is an 80's classic that few dispute. The comic is not without its differences from the film, positive and negative. Or, rather, negative and "just plain interesting." First the negative. Wrightson does a fairly decent job of capturing the likenesses of the movie actors, but he seems to have real difficulty with Ed Harris as Hank and Nann Mogg as Mrs. Danvers. Both look nothing like their onscreen counterparts. Also, for some reason, 'Something to Tide You Over' and 'The Crate' have switched places. 'Crate' is now the third story and 'Tide' the fourth. Well, okay, that's not exactly a bad thing, but still pretty weird. I'd need a lot more room to describe all of the changes Wrightson makes but it's different enough to be considered separate from the movie, and similar enough to be considered a companion piece to it). So if you're a fan of Creepshow I highly recommend this comic. It's just a shame that nobody has seen fit to reprint it since the 80's. I can't imagine why. Ya hear me, publishing companies? Reprint this comic book and sell it in places like Books A Million and Barnes & Noble!
